Plane Spotting Hotels guide

Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is the main airport serving the Louisville area in northern Kentucky. The airport was renamed in January 2019 to honor boxing legend Muhammad Ali, a native of Louisville. It's three-letter identifier is derived from the airport's original name, Standiford Field. SDF is home to the UPS Worldport, the main hub for shipping giant UPS. The hub can handle 115 packages each second. The airport itself is located on the south side of Louisville off of Interstate 264, or Watterson Expressway. The terminal has two concourses and 23 gates. In 2018 the airport handled 3.8 million passengers and 2.8 million tons of air cargo.

Official Spotting Locations

Cell Phone Lot

The new lot is open at Crittenden Drive at I-264 Watterson Expressway across from the USPS sort facility on the northwest side. It is directly under the approach for 17R. This is an officially recognized location

Other Spotting Locations

Republic Airways

The airfield perimeter fence at the Republic Airways hangar on Crittenden Drive is open for spotters. It offers an excellent view of runway 17R/35L as well as the west side of the Worldport facilities. Airfield ops may pull up to check on you, but spotting is permitted here.

Shuttle Lot (Old cell lot)

This lot is located at the end of Administration Drive on the northeast side and was formerly the old cell phone lot. It offers a good view on aircraft arriving on 17L and departing 35R. It is free for the first 2 hours.

Locations to Avoid

Avoid the UPS employee lots on the southeast corner of the airport. This is UPS property.

Anywhere that is UPS property is usually off-limits.
