The Blue Danube Airport, termed after the river Danube, or Flughafen Linz is located in Hörsching, about 15 kilometres southwest of the provincial capital city of Upper Austria, Linz. The airport is equipped with an asphalt runway ( 3000 x 60m / 9843 x 197ft ) with the magnetic heading 09/27 and a parallel grass runway (660 x 45m). On runway 29 an ILS with Cat IIIb is installed, heading 09 an ILS with Cat II. There a two taxiways to the commercial area (F & G). The apron has a size of 70.000 m² or 12 parking positions for medium size aircraft, all heading west/east. On the east end of the apron there is a special parking area for ultra large size aicraft, like Boeing 747, Boeing C-17, Antonov An-124 and An-225. There are no restrictions for aircraft landing. Offical opening hours are 0430 - 2200 UTC (0500 - 2200 UTC on weekend) and a maximum of four cargo aircraft movements between 2200 und 0430 UTC on working days.^

A) Dachterrasse / visitors terrace

Free visitors terrace on the roof of airport terminal. The new platform offers a great view over the whole apron. Because back light the terrace is only approved for night shots (Attention: there are some vibrations due to steel construction) or by bad weather.

Park your car at the airport terminal and go first towards the "Charterparkplatz 1" then right into the small street along the airport fence. After the small airport building and a mechanic door you can pictures of aircraft on the apron, but you'll need a two- or three-step-ladder. Lenses: 50 - 300mm. Optimum time for pictures: from sunrise until 0900 UTC.

Walk alongside the airport terminal and the UPS hall towards the hangar. There is a short airport fence, where you can watch aircraft (e.g. Lockheed L-188, Fokker 27) standing on the western parking positions.

Park your car at the airport terminal and go first towards the "Charterparkplatz 1" then right into the small street along the airport fence. After about 150m there is a emergency entry door and a boom where you can take pictures, but you'll need a two- or three-step-ladder.

Drive with the car from the airport terminal towards Hoersching or Wels. You'll pass the airport cargo center and the airport tank farm, then left towards the logistic center "Schenker". Before the right hand bend of the road park your car at the small street alongside the airport fence, but before the "door 27"!

At the southern fence at the "Charterparkplatz 2" you can take picturs shortly before sunset from aircraft taxing Twy G.

D) Approach Runway 09

Drive with the car from the airport terminal towards Hoersching. Before you came to the roundabout, park your car in the field path on the right side.

E) "Lager"

Drive with the car from the airport terminal to Hoersching. At the village square of Hoersching left into a smaller street, then again left. There you'll come to a level crossing, after 150m park your car in front of the door at the airport fence. This position is also good for shots of Lockheed C-130 Hercules standing on the military apron.

A bus leaving main train station every 60 minutes between 0500 and 1800 UTC for Klagenfurt airport. No bus traffic on Sunday. Additionally there is an extra Ryanair-shuttle bus one time a day according to Ryanair arrival time. € 2,20 oneway / € 4,40 return.

Wheater conditions

Most of the time the wind blows from the west or north-west. Depending on wind strength aircraft land on Rwy 27 and start with back-track on Rwy 27. In autumn there is some fog around the airport in the morning.

Meeting enthusiasts

There is a group of about 15 spotters, called "Linz Airport Report Team". If there is any special movement, you`ll find this guys taking photos at the airport fence or at night at the vistors terrace.
