Official Spotting Locations

Viewing deck

There is an official viewing deck atop the administrative building to the east of terminal A.
Entrance fee is 2 € as of JUL-2012. Access is through one automated turnstile 24/7; money changer is available.
It is either an elevator ride up or 140 steps to climb. This gives an estimation on how high you will be above the ground.
Primary view is onto the civil apron, but in fact the whole field (both runways and the extensive cargo area) can be overlooked from there; however any aircraft parked on the cargo apron will be too distant for photography.

A flight information monitor is provided, detailling even the aircraft type and the runway an aircraft will use for departure and landing, but it is limited to passenger and General Aviation movements. Cargo movements are not listed, as are (US-)military charters stopping at LEJ for fuel & supply of food. On the other hand, movements of German Airforce are listed.

On the negative side: There is no shelter from the elements at all on the viewing deck !

Leaving the area is via another turnstile, but you need to press a button before the turnstile will move.

Other Spotting Locations

Multi-level car park

Level 6 of the car park behind the check-in counters. From here you will have the option to shoot aircraft passing the taxiway bridge across motorway A14 and the adjacent railway line. Long lens required.

Check-in hall

The northern end of the check-in hall has a glass front towards runway 26R. For photography relocating into the adjacent car park (see above) is recommended.

Facilities and Transportation

One local train per hour and direction northwest to Halle Main station and southeast to Leipzig main station. This is supplemented by hourly long distance trains (IC or ICE) to the same stations (as part of a longer route Hannover - Magdeburg - Halle - Leipzig - Dresden).
Immediately atop the train station is central check-in, while it is a short walk through an elevated (and fully enclosed) walkway (featuring numerous travel agents) to Departures & Arrivals.
A few food outlets and shops cater for travellers (and visitors) needs.
