Black Point Overlook
Placed in the steep hills above the Brewer's Bay, the Black Point Overlook provides a good view of the airport terminal and runway extending into the ocean. Photos taken from here give you a nice perspective of an airport in the middle of the Carribean. Although you can view the aircraft take off and land from here as well, the overlook is too far from the runway to let you take good shots of the aircraft. Even if you have a long enough lens (300mm+), the heat haze usually prevents quality photography.

The Overlook is right off the Route 30 about a 10 minute drive from the airport. There is a place to park and also a shaded bench to sit down. Unless you come in the afternoon (first sample photo), you will be facing the sun (second sample photo).

Airport Road
Airport Road stretches all the way from the terminal along the Lindbergh Bay to the intersection with Rt 30. You can take pictures with no problem either through the single fence or above it if you move higher up along the Airport Road. This spot is good in the morning as the sun is behind you. Plenty of free parking along the road.

Brewer's Bay Road
This is an excellent spot for afternoon takeoffs from both runways. It is located by the United States Virgin Islands University information booth and bus stop near the entrance to the university on the Brewer's Bay Road (by the football field). You can park on the street and thanks to this place being on a little hill, you are above the airport fence and you get the wonderful Lindebergh Bay with palm trees as a background.

Locations to Avoid
As in any Carribean destination, the crime rate here is a bit higher than in most countries in Europe or US. However, at all locations described above I felt safe and was not approached by anyone, including the police. If you choose to walk around the airport, you probably need to be more careful at the stretch of road along the Moravian Hwy as it looks a bit more run down than the other areas.

Regular Traffic
Although one of the busiest airports in the Eastern Carribean (it serves both the US and UK Virgin Islands) with well over a million passengers a year, you usually get around 80 movements a day, most of which consist of small aircraft (Cessna, ATR, and DHC) of regional airlines (Cape Air, Air Sunshine, LIAT, Seaborne Airlines, etc.). However, US carriers like Delta, American Airlines, US Airways, and Spirit also serve this airport daily with Boeing 757s, Airbus 319s and Embraers.

Facilities and Transportation
Except for the airport facilities, there aren't any around the airport fence.

The best way to get around is of course a car that you can rent at the airport. There is a sidewalk that follows the fence of the part airport on the island (the other side of the runway stretches into the ocean) should you want to walk.

There is a couple of hotels within one kilometer from the airport terminal that allow you to be literally within a 2 minute walk from your room to the fence of the airport. Although close to the airport, the hotels feature clean and quiet Carribean beaches.

Arlanda is the largest and busiest airport in Sweden with around 20 million passengers in 2012 where you can spot mostly nordic airlines (SAS, Norwegian,...), but also Ethiopian or Thai. What is most striking about spotting at this location is that it is set in beautiful natural area surrounded by forests and lakes which make it a blast just to walk around and enjoy the scenery.

Arlanda aiport has three active runways: two of them are 2500 m long and one 3300 m long. The longest one (01L/19R) is most often used for both landings and take offs, but unfortunately that one is the furtherst from the terminal and most difficult to get to. Shots of aircraft on this runway is possible from the within the terminals (at the gates), but you have to have at least a 300mm lens and it is through glass so the quality is not overwhelming. All of the spots described bellow relate to the other two runways (01R/19L and 08/26) and most photos you see taken at Arlanda are from these two.

Official Spotting Locations
Spotter Shelter
Next to the threshold of Runway 19L there is a small wooden shelter on a hill provided by the Swedish Airport Authority. This weather protected spot gives you a good view over runway 19L/01R, taxiway W and the de-icing area. There is no glass and you are well above any fences, so you get unobstructed views. However, in terms of photography, this spot is only good for taking pictures of aircraft passing around on the taxiway W or skyshots as the runway 19L/01R is too far to allow quality landing or take off shots.

Getting there is easy if you have a bike or a car and there is also plenty of space to park. You can also walk to the spot from the terminal 5 but this is around a 30 min walk. A better option is to take a bus - do not take the three digit buses (i.e.583 etc) as those you have to pay for and the system is complicated and expensive. Instead, take the airport yellow transfer buses (two digit) because these are free and run often (except weekends, check schedule). To get to the shelter, the best option is to take bus number 10 and get off at the SAS-Hangaren stop. From there walk back to the main road and follow the sidewalks to the east (walk under the taxiway W) to the shelter (10 minute walk). Also, if you ask at the Information booth at the terminals, they will give you a map of the airport and explain how to get to the shelter.

Along the way, you can already see aircraft landing on RWY 19L, if between trees.

Other Spotting Locations
Threshold of RWY 19L
If you walk down the hill from the shelter to the road, you will find yourself right at the guiding lights with aircraft passing above you before touchdown.

Aprons by RWY 26
If you walk further out behind the shelter, you get good views of the aprons by the RWY 08/26. Shots of aircraft on the runway are possible from here, but the quality is again not overwhelming because of the angle and distance. However, you can try your luck to see what is happening at the aprons.

If you walk even further east, you cen get good shots of aircraft landing on RWY 26.
2288373
2376779

Rarely there are also take offs from RWY 08 that are visible from this spot as well.
2280346

19L/01R ops
Very easy to find is another spot and it is not far from the official pavillion. Both are in sight of each other. This one is basically anywhere along the eastern side of RWY 19L/01R where there is good light till noon. Shots of both lining up and landing aircraft, onto 19L, can be had. To get there, walk down from the shelter and make a left, head towards the IBIS airport hotel. Do not walk all the way to the hotel, but continue along the fence and pick your spot.

Threshold of RWY 01L
The best way to get here is to drive and park at the cargo parking lot and then walk for about five minutes towards the fence.

Airport cafeteria
From the airport cafeteria most activities can be observed. Some photos can also be obtained from here. The cafeteria seems to tolerate spotters as long as they buy something and prices are reasonable. Good place in the winter when it's freezing outside. It is also possible to wonder from one terminal to the other (connected by walkways) and take pictures, although obviously through glass.

Locations to Avoid
Arlanda seems pretty easygoing about spotters and I have not been approached once by anyone when walking around the fences and taking pictures.

With 1,3 million passengers in 2015, the João Paulo II Airport located in Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel is the busiest airport of the Azores archipelago. Ponta Delgada is not a busy airport, but is very spotter friendly and with good timing and knowledge of the flight schedules, you can certainly spend a great afternoon here.

João Paulo II Airport is a hub for Azores Airlines that operate both wide-bodies and narrow-bodies and represent a vast majority of flights at PDL. They are slowly retiring their fleet of A310s which you can still see here (as of autumn 2016) and replacing them with A330s. Azores Airlines additionally feature a fleet of A320s and its parent company, SATA Air Açores, also a couple of Bombardier Dash 8s. For a long time, TAP Air Portugal was the only other carrier operating flights to the Azores, even with their A330s. However, in the last years they only fly an A320 to Ponta Delgada, presumably as a result of the competition from lowcost carriers like EasyJet and Ryanair that entered the Azorean market in 2015.

Official Spotting Locations
None.

Other Spotting Locations
EN1-1A Road
The EN1-1A road runs along the entire length of the airport and given the hilly terrain is placed well above the terminal and also above the western part of the runway. Coming in the direction from the city, you can stop near the roundabout and get pretty good, unobstructed views of the runway and aprons, as well as the terminal from the north-eastern direction You can also continue past the terminal on your left (actually below you) and there is a small free public parking lot with a view of the terminal and aprons from the north-western direction. Any lens is good here as you are really close to the airport. The downside of the spots along the EN1-1A road is that for most of the year you are facing the sun. There are three solutions to this: (1) Come early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun is actually behind you (sample photo 1 - morning landing on RWY12). (2) Take photos of aircraft on the apron (sample photo 2 and sample photo 3). (3) If you come at the time of year (June) when days are longest, you should be fine (sample photo 4).
There is no jetways in Ponta Delgada so you end up walking between the aircraft and terminal both upon arrival and departure, so that gives you some good views, naturally (sample photo 5). Also, from inside the terminal at departures you get a decent view of the apron (sample photo 6).
Relva Football Field
This is probably the best spot at PDL. At the western side of the airport in the village of Relva there is a football field (which I have never seen used) located at the oneway Travessa do Beco street (or "Tv. do beco"). There is a small free public parking lot right next to it. To get to the spot, you need to walk through the gate from the parking lot to the football field, walk straight for about 200 meters pass the field and a tennis court. You get to a fence directly at the western end of the airport at an elevated spot with excellent views of the apron and the runway (sample photo 7, sample photo 8, sample photo 9, sample photo 10, sample photo 11). This spot is only good in the afternoon when the sun is behind you. Any lens will get you good photos.

You get to a fence directly at the western end of the airport at an elevated spot with excellent views of the apron and the runway (sample photo 7, sample photo 8, sample photo 9, sample photo 10, sample photo 11).
Azores Airlines - A330, A310, A320
SATA Air Acores - ATP
TAP Air Portugal - A320
Easyjet - A319
Except for the airport facilities, there aren't any around the airport fence.

The best way to get around is of course a car that you can rent at the airport. However, all spots decribed here are easy to get to on foot if you have time.

With 1,3 million passengers in 2015, the João Paulo II Airport located in Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel is the busiest airport of the Azores archipelago. This airport is the hub for Azores Airlines that operate both wide-bodies and narrow-bodies and represent a vast majority of flights at PDL. Ponta Delgada is not a busy airport, but with good timing and knowledge of the flight schedules, you can certainly spend a great afternoon here.

Arrivals/Departures and Terminal
(3) If you come at the time of year (June) when days are longest, you should be fine (sample photo 4).
Arrivals/Departures and Terminal
You get to a fence directly at the western end of the airport at an elevated spot with excellent views of the apron and the runway.
Hey there, fellow spotter!

Spotterswiki seems like a great tool to share knowledge about airports and spots - so here I am! Although some argue that part of the fun of planespotting is finding the spots yourself, I think that some basic orientation is essential and there is always some space for finding new and original angels and places :) Not to mention that sometimes you only have limited time at an ariport and you need quick and reliable infos about where to go.

My home airport is Prague, Czech Republic, but I have been lucky enough to visit a number of locations all over the world (see my favourite picture of the AF 777 from Santiago de Chile in the header). You can check out my photos here and I will be happy to share info on featured airports. So should you be interested, do let me know (email me at 01@email.cz) and - also obviously if you are heading to Prague :)

* Planes.cz sample photo

2298572 of an aicraft coming to land on RWY 19L in the morning (below the aircraft you see the taxiway W)

Threshold of RWY 01L
The best way to get here is to drive and park at the cargo parking lot and then walk for about five minutes towards the fence.

* Planes.cz sample photo of an aircraft shortly before entering RWY 01L for take off.

* Planes.cz sample photo

Locations to Avoid
Arlanda seems pretty easygoing about spotters and I have not been approached once by anyone when walking around the fences and taking pictures.

So should you be interested, do let me know and - also obviously if you are heading to Prague :)

2288373
Rarely there are also take offs from RWY 08 that are visible from this spot as well.
2280346

19L/01R ops
Very easy to find is another spot and it is not far from the official pavillion. Both are in sight of each other. This one is basically anywhere along the eastern side of RWY 19L/01R where there is good light till noon. Shots of both lining up and landing aircraft, onto 19L, can be had. To get there, walk down from the shelter and make a left, head towards the IBIS airport hotel. Do not walk all the way to the hotel, but continue along the fence and pick your spot.

19L/01R ops
Very easy to find is another spot and it is not far from the official pavillion. Both are in sight of each other. This one is basically anywhere along the eastern side of RWY 19L/01R where there is good light till noon. Shots of both lining up and landing aircraft, onto 19L, can be had. To ge there, walk down from the shelter and make a left, head towards the IBIS airport hotel. Do not walk all the way to the hotel, but continue along the fence and pick your spot.

Arland aiport has three active runways: two of them are 2500 m long and one 3300 m long.

19L ops
Very easy to find and not that far from the official pavillion. Both are in sight of each other. If you see the IBIS airport hotel, then you're heading the right way! Shots of both lining up and landing aircraft, onto 19L, can be had.
Airport cafeteria
From the airport cafeteria most activities can be observed. Some photos can also be obtained from here. The cafeteria seems to tolerate spotters as long as they buy something and prices are reasonable. Good place in the winter when it's freezing outside.

* Planes.cz sample photo of aircraft taking off from RWY 10 (165mm)

Honolulu International Airport is the primary gateway to the State of Hawaii, though in recent years, nonstop flights to the outer islands (primarily from North America) have provided alternatives. The field shares runways with Hickam Air Force Base, though the two maintain separate IATA and ICAO identifiers.

Hawaiian Airlines and Island Air maintain their hubs at Honolulu, providing connections between their inter-island flights as well as to and from overseas flights.

The airport has four paved runways (8L/26R, 8R/26L, 4L/22R, and 4R/22L) as well as two water runways (8W/26W and 4W/26W). Of these, 8R/26L, known as the Reef Runway, is the most famous as the first runway built entirely offshore, on a coral reef. Normal operations have departures on 8R, with some inter-island flights using 8L. During the day most arrivals will use 8L, while during the night 4R is used to avoid overflying residential areas. During "Kona Wind" conditions, most departures will use 22L and occasionally 26L, and arrivals will use 26L and 26R.

Official Spotting Locations
Location
Other Spotting Locations
Lagoon Dr. Parking Lot
At the southermost end of Lagoon Dr there are two parking lots that provide a good view of operations on 8R/26L, 4R/22L, and 4L/22R (Lagoon Dr lot) and 4R/22L, 4L/22R (Palekona St lot). A fence can obstruct ground-level shots at both lots, however shots are possible of aircraft when they are high enough so that the fence will not be in your shot. (When the terror alert level rises to Orange or above, police inspection checkpoints are put up on Lagoon Dr just past Aolele St, so this spot becomes inaccessible.)

To reach these spots, turn makai (towards the sea) from Nimitz Hwy or Aolele St onto Lagoon Dr and follow it until it ends. This location is also accessible by bus: Take route 31 "Kalihi Lagoon Dr" and get off at Lagoon Dr. and Palekona St., then continue walking down Lagoon Dr. to the parking lot.

Although rather close to you (200mm lens gives you a full frame 767), take offs from 8R (which is used most of the time only for departures and only for wide-bodies) are difficult to photograph as you will be facing the sun all day long.
878183

Much better light can be utilized on landings on 4R and 4L where, if you are lucky, both widebodies (also cargo) and military aircraft can be spotted and the mountains of Oahu will provide nice background.

* Planes.cz sample photo of aircraft landing on 4R (240mm) in early morning light

Iroquois Point
Iroquois Point is a gated community just across the bay west of the airport, however, when you register on the spot, you can drive in and get to the beach that provides good views of aircraft coming to land on runway 8L (where most aircraft land) and taxiing to the Reef Runway (8R). For 8L, a 250mm lens will give you a full frame A330 with sun being behind you. For 8R you will need at least 300mm and in that case heat haze can be a problem. If you succeed, the Honolulu skyline provides a nice backdrop.

Ke'ehi Lagoon Beach Park
This beach park located near the airport can provide good views of operations. A parking lot at the entrance to the park, next to the tennis courts, provides a good place to watch operations, particularly 8L, 22L, and 22R departures, and 26L, 4L, and 4R arrivals. It is however too distant for photography.

You can also continue down the road through the park to the end, and then walk to the beach. There you can see aircraft departing on 8L and 8R, and arriving on 26L and 26R. Departures will generally be too high, but arrivals, especially for 26R, can be low enough to photograph if you have a long enough lens.

There is a public restroom located in the park, should the need arise.

Aloha Tower
The observation deck at the top of Aloha Tower, located in Downtown Honolulu, offers views of the airport, though aircraft will be too distant for photography. Departures on 8R will seem to fly almost straight towards the tower as they lift off, before beginning their right turn.

Airside Viewing
Airside viewing and photography is possible in some areas due to the absence of glass in the walkways between the gates. These areas are the breezeways located between gates 11 and 12, 13 and 14, 23 and 24, and 25 and 26. Ramp clutter may be an issue.
