To get there from southbound I-95, exit on Griffin and turn left at the 4th light. Take your first left (it's a dead end, you can't miss it,) and follow that road. At the second stop sign, turn left and after a short distance you will be parallel to northbound I-95. Follow the sign and you're there. For photography, this spot is only good for takeoffs from 27R. For 9L ops, the fence will be in your way. Some people bring ladders, which is allowed, but you must stay within the parking surface. It is also not recommended to poke your lense through the fence.
The viewing area has a loudspeaker that broadcasts the ATC.

At the top of the Hibiscus parking structure is another official viewing area where it faces the space between Terminal A and B. This is a good location for aircraft landing/taxiing to 27R as well as 9L departures.

From 183, take the 71 East exit, turn right at Golf Course Rd. and follow it until the end.

The viewing area faces west to runway 17L/35R, so it is only good for photography during the morning hours. Probably only about 30% of all commercial traffic uses this runway, for landings it's even less. Most traffic on this runway is GA.

If you go exploring around that area, you will also find a large open area near the National Guard hangar that will put you within touching distance of aircraft taxiing to 35L. It goes without saying that spotters aren't welcome back there.

There is a point at Burleson Rd. where it makes an S turn and there is a guard-rail. Behind the guard-rail may seem like a great place to spot (and it is as it is directly under the final approach for 35R,) but due to the heavy flow of car traffic, most likely some driver-by will call Austin Police and they will be even more troublesome than if Airport Police stopped by.

There has been jokes that the approach at the old airport, Robert Mueller, was so close over Interstate 35 that pilots had to quickly retract the landing gear prior to touchdown. The old facilities also left much to be desired as they were small and inadequate for a growing city. Currently, ABIA is also almost growing to be too small for its needs, but citizens have often protested that such a new airport should not have to encounter such problems yet.

You can take the elevators to the top floor and you get a sweeping view of the main runway, 12R/30L, and to your left is runway 3. Most traffic is usually on 12R, you can get some nice rotation shots from that angle. Sometimes runway 3 is used and although I have never been spotting when runway 3 is used, I'm sure you can get some nice shots of approaching aircraft, the only problem is that the floodlights will probably get in your way. Long-Term Parking. You can take the elevators to the top floor and you get a sweeping view of the main runway, 12R/30L, and to your left is runway 3. Most traffic is usually on 12R, you can get some nice rotation shots from that angle. Sometimes runway 3 is used and although I have never been spotting when runway 3 is used, I'm sure you can get some nice shots of approaching aircraft, the only problem is that the floodlights will probably get in your way. A quick call to Public Affairs at 210-207-3450 is usually a good idea prior to going out.
