Observation Park
The airport authority operates an official observation park off of International Drive, located near the Air Traffic Control Tower and Park and Ride 2. The park includes an elevated, covered viewing platform with audio from the control tower. There are benches located on the viewing platform, and benches and picnic tables in the vicinity along with a small playground. Parking at the park is free, and there are public restrooms on site. The observation park offers views of 5L/23R, the longest runway at the airport. The overall field of view is good, with a small obstruction caused by a building between the park and the tarmac.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is the closest airport to our nation’s capital, as it is situated directly across the Potomac River from Washington DC. The airport handles over 20 million passengers a year.

Official Spotting Locations
There are no official spotting locations at DCA.

Other Spotting Locations
Gravely Point
Spotters are blessed with an amazing vantage point just north of the airport, called Gravely Point. The south end of the park is about a quarter mile from the threshold of runway 19. This offers great shots of both departures and arrivals. The arrivals come in very low, so I recommend ear plugs for those who have sensitive ears. The park has its own free parking and you will be largely undisturbed, as this people have been taking pictures from there for years. Many times you will be standing among several tourists and sports players just watching the airport activity.
1344187 (MD-82 taking off runway 1 with approaching plane behind)

Walking Paths
There is a path going from Gravely Point to the south side of the airport and beyond that hugs the airport boundary. The path goes 200ft behind runway 15 (regional traffic runway) at its closest point, but a jet-blast/prop-wash wall blocks any good shots. At another point, the path goes up onto a bridge, which offers a good view of runways 15 and 19. There is another bridge farther south towards the US Airways gates of the new terminal. You will need a good lens to get decent shots here, due to the distance. You can make your way from the path up to the top of the parking garages for a different angle. This offers a good shot of the terminal.
At the south end of the airport, while still on the walking path, you can get a nice view of the GA terminal, though you will have to contend with cars in a parking lot.

Be aware that the walking path does have a good deal of other people using it, to include bikers, skaters and other pedestrians.

This is not so much of a problem until you get on the bridges, where there is limited space for the path.

Locations to Avoid
Walking Paths
As long as you stay in the Gravely Point Park area and blend in with other visitors of the park, you are unlikely to be approached by the police. However, if you move closer to the fence, especially when there are few people in the park (early morning) and especially along the walking path between the park and the terminal, you stand out and are more likely to be questioned, have your ID ready.

Regular Traffic
Most jet traffic uses the main runway 1-19. Landings to the south follow the Potomac river and make a 40° turn over the George Mason bridge. This unusual arrival procedure is similar to Kai-Tak's infamous IGS 13 approach but without heavy jets. Prohibited airspace north of the airport containing the White House and Capitol mandates this procedure. The Washington Monument also would be a hindrance to safe navigation. Commuter planes may often use the smaller runways 4-22 and 15-33. General Aviation and non scheduled charters were not allowed into Reagan National when the airport reopened after the 9/11 attacks. Beginning in October 2005 some general aviation aircraft have been allowed to return. They must have passenger manifests submitted 24 hours in advance. Pilots must be fingerprinted and undergo background checks. The plane, passengers and flight crew must be screened at a designated gateway airport and an armed marshall must be onboard. Due to the complex requirements general aviation traffic remains a rarity. Sports team charters on commercial airliners continue to use Dulles because of these restrictions.

Facilities and Transportation
Ronald Reagan Airport has direct rail service into the nation’s capital via the WMATA system, which has a Yellow/Blue Line Metro stop at the airport.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is the closest airport to our nation’s capital, as it is situated directly across the Potomac River from Washington DC. The airport handles over 20 million passengers a year.

Official Spotting Locations
There are no official spotting locations at EWR.

Newark-Liberty International Airport (EWR) is a long-standing hub for the New York area. The airport serves over 30 airlines and is the third-largest hub for United Airlines in the country. EWR is about 15 miles from Manhattan and is the busiest airport in the region in terms of flights.

Official Spotting Locations
There are no official spotting locations at EWR.

Other Spotting Locations
IKEA Elizabeth
A planespotting favorite, IKEA Elizabeth offers amazing views of EWR takeoffs and landings. The property is located directly across the New Jersey Turnpike from the airport and the parking lot is accessible at all times of day.

Area Roads
Take a short drive up and down I-95 (NJ Turnpike), I-78, or US. 9, which all border the airport. At any given time, flights pass over these major arteries, making multiple passages worthwhile.

On Airport Grounds
Like JFK, Newark-Liberty offers amazing aircraft shots from the approach ramps leading up to some terminal buildings. Aircraft views obtained from these areas on clear days also offer an amazing vista of the New York skyline, almost 15 miles away.

Locations to Avoid
Avoid any locations where you may be trespassing or destroying property. Don't loiter too long in any one spot, as police may find you suspicious.

Regular Traffic
Newark serves 30+ airlines, both domestic and international.

Facilities and Transportation
Newark-Liberty International Airport is served by the AirTrain, which can be a fun, photo-filled experience for a planespotter. The train runs 24/7, 365 days a year and is completely free to ride around Liberty. The AirTrain also connects with NJ Transit and provides quick transit to Manhattan and Philadelphia.

Fiorello LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is the third-largest airport in the New York region and is considered to be one of the worst airports in the world. The airport is near Rikers Island Prision and is surrounded by water on three sides.

Official Spotting Locations
There are no official spotting locations at LGA.

Other Spotting Locations
Planeview Park
The best location to spot is on the approach to runway 4. There is a public park approximately 100 yards to the beginning of this runway. The aircraft fly in at about 35 feet above the park and 25 feet above the airport access road. This is a great place if not one of the best places in all of New York city to spot and photograph aircraft. You are so close that you can see the passengers faces through the windows. Spotting here is only good on approaches. Its location is on the corner of 23rd Avenue and 86th. The park is just opposite the old College of Aeronautics, now called Vaughn College. Here you will get an unubstructed view of all incoming aircraft. Everything from Saab 340s to Boeing 767-300s. No more L-1011s, or DC-10s here.

One note, do not spot or photograph anywhere on this or any of the Port Authority airports in New York City or New Jersey (KJFK, KLGA, KEWR). You can spot and photograph at and around Tetterboro, security there is laxed.

Overlook Park
Along Ditmars Boulevard, and directly across the Grand Central from LaGuardia’s main terminals, is Overlook Park. The tiny green space affords a view of the entire airport.

Locations to Avoid
Avoid spotting from inside the perimiter fence of the airport property at LGA when runway 4 is in use as loitering is not permitted by PANYNJ Police and is strictly enforced.

Regular Traffic
Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines, Virgin America, WestJet

Facilities and Transportation
Inside LaGuardia's terminals, there may be some spotting locations.

LaGuardia Airport is served only by the MTA system, which has several bus routes that stop at the airport.
829698

Bayswater Park
On Mott Ave. right off of Sheridan Blvd.

6005616

The Mounds
A large mound next to a football (soccer) field. In between 230 st. and 230 pl., behind the school. Arivals on 22L can be seen from this location, and the light is especally nice during the late evening hours.
Locals are typically friendly and on some days you might even enjoy a soccer match while spotting. Be careful of tics.

6187993
6121217
6118213

Howard Beach
Nicknamed "HoBe", this spot is located on Cross Bay Blvd, and provides and excellent view of planes taking off from runway 31L. The planes turn left after takeoff in the interest of noise abatement, so nice banking shots are common.

6144486

The Ramada Parking Lot
The Ramada parking lot is also a good place for arrivals on 13L. It is located on 144 JFK Airport Drive, and I have not been hassled by police.

Locations to Avoid
Please try to avoid photography from within the airport grounds.
Airlines common on a daily basis, and during daylight hours:
Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT) is the nations 6th busiest airport and was a former hub of US Airways, which merged with American Airlines in 2013 to create the world’s largest airline. CLT is located west of the metropolitan city of Charlotte, North Carolina and is the largest airport in the United States without nonstop service to Asia.

Spotting Locations
City of Charlotte Airport Overlook
Probably the best all-around location for spotters. Located on the west side of the airport, near the threshold of 18C.
Large parking lot, with benches and picnic tables. Good up close views, a great area for families and no hassles from police. Will sometimes be closed during elevated terror threat levels. It is not scheduled to close as the 3rd runway begins to operate later this year.

Located on Old Dowd Road. Open from 8:30am until 10:30pm. Light best from 1pm onwards especially if taking photos of 36L departures that mostly rotate way before the viewing area.

Carolinas Aviation Museum
For a nominal $5 entry fee (lower fees for students and seniors), you can use the photo stand near the threshold of 18L. Westward facing, this is an excellent location in the morning when the sun is at your back albeit a little small.

Located at the north side of airport. Just follow the signs. A great museum with a large variety of aircraft to see, and it's always good to support the museum by purchasing a gift from the shop.

If navigating from the Overview spot (see above) it's much easier to head out onto the Billy Graham Expressway to avoid going round in loops on the airport perimeter and then follow the signs round.

Other Spotting Locations
Old Dowd Road Fitness Trail
This meandering trail can get you some good "through the fence" views at various points around the west side. However, there is NO PARKING, so be prepared to park your car either at the overlook or some other legal spot. Police will generally leave photographers alone, but no guarantees.

Wilson Air
The GA ramp is right next to 36R and there is a break in a fence gate which offers some close in shots from just below the runway. Unfortunately, airport police will harass you if you take pictures from there (happened to me twice) though you are perfectly legal in that spot.

Locations to Avoid
Official Spotting Locations
Flight Path Park
Flight Path Park is a park off Russ Baker Way under the apporach to 26L, a runway primarily used for airline departures and private aircraft. All movements can be logged from here with decent optics, but photography is limited.

The park has a small, humped map of earth, giving you the effect of standing "on the top of the world." Aircraft fly directly overhead, as the park is directly in their "flightpath."

To the north of this place is the Institute of Technology in which you can log WestJets' B-737-200 C-GWJT.

Main Terminal
Only ticketed passengers are allowed on the concourses. There are two 'public' locations from which the action can be watched, but not satisfactorily photographed. On the main floor by the entrance to the C gates are a few chairs facing the window. In the basement food court there are tables and chairs with a somewhat constricted view.

Just follow the "Observation Area" signs. The location is facing west.

If you are just logging airplanes without photographing this might be the ideal location for you as all landings of 26R will have to pass by here in order to get to 26L for takeoff and you can read of the registrations of all departing aircraft (use 26L). If you're taking pictures it might only be of interest as a refuge on a (frequent) rainy day but even then I personally would prefer the Templeton Stop of the Canada Line (see "Templeton Road" comment).

Other Spotting Locations
Templeton Street
Best location if you want to take airborne shots of the arriving aircraft as most landings are on 26R. You will only miss a few landing aircraft (the bizzjets + freighters + about 2/3 of the flights going to the south terminal = local Props).

How to get there:
1) By car: Left at the second traffic light from the airport (15-20 minutes walk). You will see many cars parked on a dirt track beside the road. The subjects are a bit high and the smaller types (Dash-8 etc.) will require a long lens (about 400mm on a fullformat sensor).

2) By foot: The "Templeton" stop of the Canada-Line Sky Train is a 2min walk from this location and on a rainy day you might even stay and hide from the rain in this stop, but it's tricky to keep the lightpoles out of the picture).

You won't be able to log or even see the departures which always use 26L.

"Avis" Lot
The most desirable location if you want to take pictures and have the coastal mountains as the background. This is the first turn left out of the airport by the blast screens. Excellent photos over the fence and all 08L/26R movements can be seen. However (there had to be one didn't there ?), the businesses on this road are private property and not very tolerant. You can get lucky and be left alone for hours or be unlucky and thrown out immediately. Worth the gamble though.

Requires a ladder due to the fence.

South Terminal
This is on the other (South) side of the airport from the main terminal and there is a parking lot which overlooks the ramp and the rather distant 08R/26L runway. Good for logging as everything at Vancouver passes this location sooner or later, and there are reasonable photographic opportunities through the fence.

Floatplanes come and go on the Fraser River to the S. of the small terminal, and most of the aircraft parked on the ramps can be logged and some photographed by walking around.

There is a free shuttle bus connecting the south terminal to the main terminal.

East of the South Terminal is a "boneyard" in which some older Pacific Coastal and a Quebecair SF-340s + a SH-360 are stored engineless but in full colors (as of Sep. 2009).

Ferguson Road
When arrivals are on 08L, a long drive from the airport via Templeton Road (above) will eventually lead to a small gravel pull-off at the seashore and close to the threshold.
All arrivals as well as those using runway 12 can be logged and photographed although the location faces South and so is best in the early morning/late evening in the summer. Also along Ferguson Road past the UPS facility there is a raised hill area. Good to photograph on sunny summer evenings when the airport is landing west.

Locations to Avoid
Multi-storey car park
Anyone spotting from the top floor is visible to the control tower, with predictable results.

Regular Traffic
Mostly Air Canada (all types) + Air Canada Jazz (based there) + WestJet + Pacific Coastal Airlines (based there) and a few more interesting airplanes (Air North, Enerjet, Central Mountain Air, Northern Thunderbird Air, Cargojet etc). Of course all the main US airlines are coming to YVR as well (except Southwest) which make up about 10-15% of the traffic, I would guess.

Longrange: Many AC B-767s + some of their A330s + B-777s + some asian (e.g. JAL, China Eastern, China Airlines, EVA, Philippines) and european (2 x BA, LH, KL)longrange flights are coming in daily. Some charter flights only operate during the summer and only on certain days (e.g. Condor, Thomas Cook (both GB + Scandinavian).

Facilities and Transportation
The SkyTrain's Canada Line connects the airport with downtown (26min ($3.75) to Waterfront Station which is next to the Sea Plane Port and has quite a lot of traffic but the registrations (approx. 20 different) start to repeat after about 2 hours).

Cash fares from the main terminal include a $5.00 surcharge- go to the Pharmasave pharmacy below the domestic arrivals area and purchase a book of "FareSavers" tickets. One zone will do- and then upgrade to a 2-zone fare to enter into Vancouver from Richmond when you get to Bridgeport. (A couple of extra steps but saves you five bucks.) Travel across zone boundaries after 6:30pm on weekdays and all day on weekends and holidays is only $2.50. The Airport Surcharge applies to cash fares 24/7.

Stations at the airport are: Templeton (Templeton Road), Sea Island Way (Air Canada hangars) and the main terminal.

There are some buses as well: At the airport- there is bus service but it is sporadic.

The South Terminal is connected to the main Terminal by a shuttle bus operated by the airport authority.

Wilson Air
The GA ramp is right next to 36R and there is a break in a fence gate which offers some close in shots from just below the runway. Unfortunately, airport police will harass you if you take pictures from there (happened to me twice) though you are perfectly legal in that spot.

Locations to Avoid
The VOR
A great location, especially when arrivals are from the south. While law enforcement has never bothered me there, the potential to be hassled is likely fairly high.

Located on Byrum Drive.

The VOR
A great location, especially when arrivals are from the south. While law enforcement has never bothered me there, the potential to be hassled is likely fairly high.

Located on Byrum Drive.
426611

Wilson Air
The GA ramp is right next to 36R and there is a break in a fence gate which offers some close in shots from just below the runway. Unfortunately, airport police will harass you if you take pictures from there (happened to me twice) though you are perfectly legal in that spot.

Locations to Avoid
Location
Regular Traffic
The majority of the US Airways fleet: A319, A320, A321, A330, B737, B757, ERJ-145, E170, E190, Dash-8. Air Candada Jazz CRJ100/CRJ200. Airtran B717. AA MD-88. Delta DC-9, A319.

There are no official spotting locations at JFK.

Other Spotting Locations
Terminal 7 departure lounge
Ideal for activity on 13L. Great for 13L TDZ shots and gate action.
829698

Bayswater Park
Great for 13R takeoff, 31L landings, 4R landings.

Regular Traffic
Airlines common on a daily basis, and during daylight hours:

American Airlines, JetBlue, Delta, United, British Airways, Air France, LOT, KLM, Emirates, Lufthansa, Iberia, Alitalia, Swiss, Air China, Austrian.

Facilities and Transportation
John F. Kennedy International Airport is served by the AirTrain, which can be a fun, photo-filled experience for a planespotter. The train runs 24/7, 365 days a year and is completely free to ride around JFK Airport. The AirTrain also connects with the paid MTA system and provides quick transit to Manhattan.

Other Spotting Locations
Terminal 7 departure lounge
Ideal for activity on 13L. Great for 13L TDZ shots and gate action.
829698

Bayswater Park
Great for 13R takeoff, 31L landings, 4R landings.

Regular Traffic
Airlines common on a daily basis, and during daylight hours:

American Airlines, JetBlue, Delta, United, British Airways, Air France, LOT, KLM, Emirates, Lufthansa, Iberia, Alitalia, Swiss, Air China, Austrian.
