The Daytona Beach International Airport is a regional airport located just west of Daytona Beach, Florida. The airport is consistently one of the top 20 busiest in the United States in terms of aircraft operations, but sees very few airline operations. A number of major flight schools (most notably Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University) are located on the field and operate hundreds of training flights per day in light aircraft. Each year during February and July the airport becomes a busy hub for corporate traffic, as race teams ferry equipment and personnel into Daytona for NASCAR races. During the race weeks Daytona becomes a bustling airport ripe for spotting, during the rest of the year spotting in Daytona is less than noteworthy.

Official Spotting Locations
Emil Buehler AMS Center
Embry-Riddle's Daytona campus is home to the only "official" spotting location in Daytona. The recently completed Emil Buehler maintenance building includes a second and third floor open patio which overlooks the airport. The building is open to Embry-Riddle students and registered visitors to the campus. The deck directly overlooks Embry-Riddle's private ramp, as well as the approach to Runway 25R. Be aware that the building is often locked on nights and weekends.

7364907
7323632

Other Spotting Locations
ERAU Dirt Lot
The dirt parking lot on the South side of the Embry-Riddle campus is a popular location for students when Runway 25R is in use. While the sunlight rarely favors this location, an electrical transformer box provides elevation over the fence for photography, and aircraft taxi to within feet of the fence line.

6779783

Midway Avenue Dirt Lot
A parking area exists between Midway Avenue and the Daytona Speedway just west of the airport's terminal. This area has recently been branded as the airport's cell phone waiting lot. As with all locations around Daytona, there is no easy way to photograph over the fence, but shooting through the fence can yield good photographs of aircraft taxiing on Taxiway November, especially in the late afternoon.

6677132

ATP Jetcenter Vacant Lot
A vacant lot exists just North of the ATP Jetcenter FBO where the Volusia County Mosquito Control office was formerly located. As of Fall 2010, this lot was being excavated for environmental abatement and the dirt mounds provided excellent viewing over the fence. This vacant lot is one of the only areas in Daytona which has favorable lighting for photography. When Runway 25R is in use this location is ideal. When the 7's are being used, parking along the airport fence on Belvue Ave. Ext. is possible, but is still not as close to the runway. As long as the lot continues to be vacant, this is by far the best spotting location in Daytona.

6780571
6779761

Bellevue Avenue Extension
West of the Yelvington Jet Aviation FBO, Bellevue Avenue Extension runs parallel to Runway 7L. Nearby Yelvington the road is posted no-parking, no-stopping. Further West it is common for cars to stop and watch aircraft over the fence. The Volusia County Sheriff has been known to ask cars to move to the South shoulder of the street (away from the airport) but has generally been reasonable to spotters in this location.

6955557

Locations to Avoid
The Volusia County Sheriff's office takes pride in removing spotters from the airport perimeter. If hassled by the police, simply move along; they do not respond well to logic and reason. If your aim is to avoid the police, stick to Embry-Riddle's campus, otherwise be prepared to be told not to park near the airport fence.

Regular Traffic
Facilities and Transportation
The airport is connected to the VOTRAN bus network, but service is sporadic and limited. Outside of the Embry-Riddle campus, a car is necessary for any spotting.

The Osaka Kansai International Airport is located on an artificial island in the Osaka Bay, Southwest of the city of Osaka. Being located on a dedicated island, there are limited spotting opportunities available (without renting a boat of course). Luckily, the airport has provided an excellent spotting area adjacent to the threshold of the airport's main runway. The airport observation hall offers unique views overlooking the Osaka Bay, the airport causeway, and widebody aircraft approaching the airport.

Official Spotting Locations
SkyView Observation Hall
Osaka Kansai has a dedicated spotting location which is accessible by bus from the passenger terminal. The SkyView Observation hall is housed in a pair of four-story buildings linked by an aerial walkway. These buildings overlook the approach for Runway 24L as well as the North end of the terminal and apron. Both buildings feature rooftop decks (3rd and 4th floor). Inside the buildings there are two aviation themed restaurants (a Concorde themed formal restaurant on the 2nd floor of the West building and a cafe style restaurant on the 3rd floor of the East building) as well as an aviation hobby shop. A Japanese-language bus tour of the airport is available on weekends and Holidays, departing from the first floor of the SkyView hall.

The spotting deck is best for photography in the afternoon hours, but there are still some opportunities for photography of aircraft on the ramp in morning light. Photography of aircraft approaching Runway 24L can be accomplished with a 250mm focal length lens or smaller, but a longer lens may be desired for smaller aircraft (such as the Japan Coast Guard Saab 340).

The Observation hall is linked to the passenger terminal by a dedicated bus line which runs approximately every half hour. From the terminal, go outside to the curb and turn left; look for Bus Stop 1 (the furthest South bus stop). The bus will be labeled in English as "Observation Hall". As of July 2012 both the shuttle bus and the observation hall are free of charge. Be aware that private bus lines run service to the Observation Hall and other nearby destinations for a fare. The free shuttle operates from Stop 1 and is run by Nankai Bus.

7415377
7415383
7416150

Locations to Avoid
Since Osaka Kansai is located on a dedicated island it is difficult to access other areas of the airport for spotting purposes. The SkyView tower offers plenty of excellent spotting opportunities and there should be no need to poke around other corners of the airfield.

Regular Traffic
Osaka sees frequent traffic from Japanese domestic carriers, as well as regular service from many major carriers ranging from Korean Air to Delta and Lufthansa. Domestic traffic often includes widebody aircraft (ANA and JAL 767-300s) in addition to frequent B737 and A320 series traffic. International carriers utilize various aircraft types, ranging from 737s up to 747s and 777-300s. The Japan Coast Guard operates a station near the SkyView deck; aircraft stationed at the Coast Guard hangar include Bell 212 and Super Puma aircraft, as well as specialized Saab 340 maritime patrol turboprops.

Facilities and Transportation
The Kansai spotting area can be accessed via a free shuttle bus from the airport terminal or by automobile across the airport causeway. The airport terminal is most easily reached by train, either on the Nankai Electric or JR West line. Typical airport amenities are available inside the passenger terminal. The SkyView complex is home to two restaurants, restrooms, vending machines, as well as an aviation hobby shop.

Princess Juliana Airport in St. Maarten is widely regarded as an aircraft spotters' Mecca, a tropical resort destination with unparalleled views of approaching jet aircraft. St. Maarten's Maho Beach is frequently featured in mainstream media due to its unique proximity to Princess Juliana Airport; the beach is located on a small strip of land between the threshold of the airport's runway and the sea. Aircraft as large as the Boeing 747 and the Airbus A340 operate scheduled service into the airport as well as unique vintage cargo aircraft such as the DC-3 and DC-4.

Official Spotting Locations
Princess Juliana Airport has no "official" spotting location, but Maho Beach and the Sunset Beach Bar (below) are the de facto spotting location for the airport.

Other Spotting Locations
Sunset Beach Bar
Sunset Beach Bar is located on the South end of Maho Beach, which is located mere feet from the threshold of SXM's Runway 10. The beach and the Beach Bar are a five to ten minute walk (or a quick taxi ride) from the airport terminal. The Sunset Beach Bar is welcoming to spotters; a surfboard posted in the sand is regularly updated with the day's scheduled departing and arriving aircraft. The bar features dozens of picnic tables and open seating facing the beach to view aircraft. The beach and rocks surrounding the bar offer countless angles of aircraft arriving low over the beach.

Since aircraft will be flying very low over the beach, most aircraft will not require a large telephoto zoom lens. Aircraft such as the 747 or A340 will fill the frame at focal lengths as low as 18mm from the bar. Wide-angle and fish-eye shots are possible from the beach under the runway center line. No more than 150mm will be required for even the smallest aircraft.

Lighting for photography from the bar is most favorable in the morning during the winter time. Thanks to the large, open beach it is easy to move around to follow the most favorable light. Be aware that St. Maarten and Maho beach have become very popular lately as a cruise ship destination. Depending on the season or day of week the beach and bar may be pleasant and quiet, or swamped with tourists. If you want peace and quiet, avoid Saturdays during the late Winter and early Spring.

7341487
7341622
2174255

Runway End - Beach Side
Beacon Hill Road runs around the airport and separates the airport from the beach. A very low fence separates the airport from the beach and road. On the airport side of the road there is a small grassy area and a chest-high fence which allows you to get up-close and personal with aircraft departing on Runway 10. Jetliners will often taxi very close to the fence to line up for the runway - caution jet-blast. Tourists and locals will often attempt to "ride the fence", clinging onto the chain link fence while being blasted by departing aircraft. Be aware that jet blast will kick up a lot of sand and rocks and can be damaging to camera equipment and to people. The low fence offers great opportunities for ground shots.

7341767
7341626

Runway End - Hill Side
If you follow the road from the terminal to the right (seeing it from the terminal as you leave) you will follow the runway for a while and then the road will bend to the right and pass the threshold of the runway. Stop here and use any of the small, knee high dirthills to stand on. Now you have a great view of departing aircraft roaring straight at you.

481556

Locations to Avoid
Use caution when beach-side - be prepared to be bowled over by tourists attempting to "ride the fence". St. Maarten is extremely spotter friendly, but be respectful and try not to trod across private property in search for a new angle.

Regular Traffic
Depending on the season and day of week, St. Maarten sees between ten and thirty jet movements a day. Major US carriers (AA, DL, US, UA, B6) operate daily or near-daily service with narrowbody equipment. Air France flies a single daily flight from Paris on an A340, KLM operates a 3x weekly service from Amsterdam with a 747-400. Caribbean airlines such as Insel Air and LIAT are regular visitors with numerous daily flights on equipment including DHC-8s, MD-80s, and F-100s. Local carriers such as WinAir and St. Barths Commuter operate frequent service to nearby islands with small equipment including DHC-6 Twin Otters and Britten-Norman BN-2 Islanders. St. Maarten may not be the busiest commercial airport in the Caribbean, but it certainly has an impressive variety of aircraft.

Facilities and Transportation
The Sunset Beach Bar offers food, drink, and bathrooms. Bus service on the island is infrequent and unpredictable; taxis are reasonably priced and easy to come by. The airport terminal is well within walking distance.
The Opa-locka Executive Airport is a general use airport located in Opa-locka, Florida. OPF is home to a number of aircraft storage and scrap companies which tear down aircraft as large as DC-10s and 707s at the airport. Additionally, there is a large cargo carrier presence at OPF, aircraft such as DC-3s, Convair twins, and even Antonov An-12s frequently operate cargo flights from OPF. While Opa-locka has no official spotting locations, the numerous rare and interesting aircraft on the field make it an excellent through-the-fence spotting location.
OPF's primary aircraft dis-assembly and scrapping facilities are located on a ramp across from the intersection of Wright Dr. and Bennett Rd. The airside/landside fence line in this area is not permanent and may move dependent on the number of aircraft undergoing work. You should easily be able to park along the fence line, airside workers are used to the sight of cameras poking over and around the fence. From this location you can view parked airliners (DC-10s, DC-8s) undergoing scrapping, OPF's resident Russian aircraft (AN-12s, AN-24s and AN-26s), and various parked GA and cargo aircraft.
The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is a primarily-domestic commercial airport in the city of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The airport sees heavy traffic from all US domestic carriers with a heavy presence from Low Cost Carriers such as Southwest. Limited international flights are provided by the likes of Bahamasair and Air Transat. FLL offers multiple excellent spotting areas and very frequent traffic, albeit mostly domestic narrowbodies. Combined with the nearby Miami International Airport, Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, and Opa-locka Airport, FLL is an integral part of one of the best spotting regions in the United States.

Official Spotting Locations
Aircraft Viewing Area
FLL's official spotting location is located on SW 39th Street (from SB I-95 exit on Griffin, turn left on S Perimeter Rd and follow the signs). The spotting location is a small parking lot adjacent to the 9L threshold which features loudspeakers playing the airport's local control frequency. For photography, this can be used for 27R departures and 9L operations. For operations on 9L, the airport's fence will obstruct your view from ground level. Many locals bring stepladders or stand atop their vehicles in the parking area to shoot over the fence. The sunlight is decent for photography year round, best during the winter. Runway 9 operations are ideally photographed during the morning, while 27 is best for evening, but you can make due with either operation at most times of the day. For most traffic no more than a 150mm lens is required.

Hibiscus Garage
At the top of the Hibiscus parking structure is another official viewing area where it faces the space between Terminal A and B. This is a good location for aircraft landing/taxiing to 27R as well as 9L departures.
7187278

Other Spotting Locations
Griffin Rd. Dog Park
A small dog park between Griffin Road and Perimeter road overlooks operations on 9R/27L. This runway is used primarily for small commuter aircraft and GA traffic (typically nothing larger than an ATR). This runway is currently under construction, being expanded in length to equal 9L. It is unknown at this time whether the viewing area at the dog park will remain when the runway re-opens in 2014.

Locations to Avoid
Avoid stopping along the roadways surrounding the airport, especially in the North cargo areas. You will be moved along.

Regular Traffic
Air Canada (A319, A321, E175, B767), Air Jamaica (A320, A321, A319), Air Tran (717, 737), Air Transat (A310, A330, though the A330 is rare), AA (MD-80s, 737, 757), American Eagle (ATR), America West (A319, A757), Avianca (757), BahamasAir (737-200), CanJet (737), Delta Connection (E135, E145, CRJ), Cayman (???), Continental (737, 757), Continental Connection (Gulfstream International) (Beech 1900 and other small-time props), Delta, including Song (737, 757, 767), Frontier (A318, A319), Hooters Air (???), JetBlue (A320), Northwest (A319, A321, 757), Midwest (MD-80s, 717), Spirit (MD-80s, A319, A321), Southwest (737), Sun Country (???), United, as Ted (A320), Thomsonfly (???), U.S. Airways (737, A319, A321, 757, E170), Usa 3000 (A320), WestJet (737)

Facilities and Transportation
The Hibiscus garage is easily reached on foot from the main terminal complex, all other locations require an automobile. If visiting FLL, be sure to rent a car and check out the Miami airport, 45 minutes to the South as well.

The Miami International Airport is one of the best spotting locations in the United States. Miami is a hub for South and Central American traffic (both passenger and cargo) coming into the United States, and also serves as a major hub for American Airlines. The combination of frequent international heavy traffic and a pair of excellent spotting locations make Miami a must-see destination. The nearby Opa-locka Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport can easily be combined with Miami for an all-inclusive spotting day-trip.

Official Spotting Locations
The Holes
The only official spotting location at MIA is called the "holes." The "holes" is aptly named for the holes cut-out in the fence. The airport authority has provided a half dozen viewing ports cut out from the fence, ideally located for camera lenses. This location provides viewing for the approach end of RWY 08L, 08R and 12 as well as limited views of departures for RWY 26L, 26R and 30.

This spot is located on NW 25 ST, across from 65 AVE. The holes are cut in the fence just east of the US Customs building. Do not park in the Customs Employee lot, but across the street to the South. This location does not provide any shade or places to sit, many locals bring lawn chairs and water to cope with the Miami heat.

For photography, the light is best during the Winter months as the sun is further South, but photography is possible nearly all day, year round. The holes are very close to the action and no more than 250mm of zoom is necessary. If traveling with a group of friends, be aware that spots at the fence are limited and the area can get crowded.
Other Spotting Locations
NW 72 Ave and 14 St
Miami's second spotting location is not officially recognized by the airport, but is much more popular with locals than "The Holes". Known commonly as "El Dorado" or "The Furniture Store" this location is the dead-end of NW 72 AVE. Do not park in the parking lots of El Dorado or the police station, there is plenty of parking along the street. Concrete K-rails and large stones block the end of the street, these can be used as vantage points to gain elevation and shoot over the airport fence and the railroad tracks between the street and airport.

This spot affords great views of arrivals and departures on RWY 09. Most of the cargo flights and South American international heavies will arrive and depart on this runway. Again, the light is better during winter months at this spot, but can be used year round during all daylight hours. For almost all aircraft, 300mm of zoom will be plenty, even for the smaller American Eagle ATRs.

The police will occasionally stop by and ask for cars to be moved if they are blocking the street, otherwise you will rarely be hassled. This location provides plenty of shade, and a convenience store is a quick walk across NW 12th ST.
The Portland International Jetport is a regional airport located on the border between Portland and South Portland, Maine. The Jetport is a largely seasonal airport seeing heavy service from mainline jets in the summer, but light traffic from mostly Regional Jets in the winter. Spotting opportunities at the airport are limited, but there are a number of sites around the airport perimeter which offer views of aircraft movement.

Official Spotting Locations
South Dirt Lot (Mark Haskell Memorial Viewing Area)
The Jetport has set up an official spotting area to the South of the airport perimeter, a dirt lot just off of Westbrook Street and Aviation Blvd. The lot has recently been named, in memory of a PWM air traffic controller who was killed when his YAK-52 crashed at the Jetport in 2010. The lot is recognized by the airport and the local police department, and is frequently populated by plane watchers from all demographics. The designated spotting location can be identified by a large "spotting guide" sign which illustrates the basic aircraft types which frequent Portland. The official spotting area is not ideal for photography, as a large fence and a significant distance separate it from the runway. With a decent telephoto lens and a ladder or automobile to stand on photography is possible, as the sunlight almost always favors the Southern location. Apart from the fence, the view of the entire airport is more or less unobstructed, so it is a good place to park and simply watch aircraft. Example photos from the official spotting location (taken standing atop a vehicle with a 55-250mm lens) can be found below.

7022464
7025320

Other Spotting Locations
Jetport Plaza Road Circle
A roundabout where Jetport Plaza Road and Westbrook Street meet is a frequent stopping place for aircraft watchers. Like the approved spotting area, a fence separates watchers from the action, but a source of elevation (a car roof for example) can place you right in the middle of the action for photos. Additionally, the roundabout is much closer to the runway. The roundabout is heavily posted with "No Parking" signs, and local law enforcement frequently asks visitors to move up the hill to the approved spotting location. If you park elsewhere and walk to the fence line, law enforcement should not hassle you.

6618192

Parking Garage Rooftop
The top story of the terminal parking garage offers relatively good views of the airport action at all times of the day. Unfortunately, the runways and taxiways are backlit for all but the earliest summer hours. If your aim is to take photographs, an early morning (i.e. 5:30am-7am) trip is a must. For non-photographic viewing, the garage roof offers the most all-inclusive viewing of anywhere on the airport, save the terminal itself.

6925902

Regular Traffic
Traffic at the Jetport is very seasonal, varying from a bustling mainline destination in the summer to a sleepy RJ landing strip in the winter. Portland is served domestically by Delta, US Airways, United, and their regional affiliates, as well as JetBlue and AirTran. Internationally, Portland sees service from Air Canada's regional partner Air Georgian, as well as the charter operator Twin Cities Air Service. In the middle of the summer 737s, A320s, and MD-88s join a heavy mix of Regional Jets and corporate traffic. During the winter months, the spread of aircraft remains relatively the same, but thins out significantly during the day. FedEx flies a single Boeing 757 into Portland which remains throughout the day, while small cargo feeder aircraft operate sporadically.

Facilities and Transportation
The Jetport is served frequently by the Portland Metro bus system and private taxis, and is easily accessed by automobile from I-95. A car is necessary for most all spotting around the airport, although sidewalks are present throughout Portland and South Portland. The main terminal features multiple restaurants both airside and landside, as well as public restrooms and an information booth.

Fulton County Brown Field is a regional General Aviation airport located in the Fulton Industrial region of Atlanta. The airport acts a reliever for the busier GA airports in the region such as Dekalb-Peachtree Airport and Cobb County McCollum Field. Fulton County is a relatively sleepy airport, typically only seeing a handful or aircraft operations per hour. Spotting locations are available to catch the occasional interesting movement at FTY.

Official Spotting Locations
Hilltop Viewing Area
Located directly adjacent to the 1950's style terminal and former air traffic control tower is a small viewing area. A couple of benches, a picnic table, and a small playground overlook the airport's main ramp. The entire terminal area is typically deserted, so park wherever you please in the large parking lot at the end of Aviation Circle. Don't be scared off by the dozens of police vehicles, Fulton County parks their out of service police cruisers and public service vehicles in the vast empty parking lot at the airport. For photography, the light is best in the early morning. 100-300mm of focal length should be plenty, a 400mm lens may open up more options for taking shots of parked aircraft on the ramp.

7052861
7052831

Other Spotting Locations
Aero Drive Hangars
Just before the end of Aero Drive a hangar parking lot provides the only decent viewing area to catch aircraft movements on the field. The lot only overlooks Runway 26, but this runway is the primary calm-wind runway for the airport. The parking lot is directly adjacent to the ramp and has only a chest-high fence (no ladders required.) The barbed wire topping the fence has been tied back by frequent visitors, so it shouldn't get in the way. Light is best in the early morning. 100-300mm of focal length is sufficient for most traffic taxiing and on Runway 26, 400mm is necessary for smaller aircraft operating on 26.

7041386
6767004

Regular Traffic
FTY has no scheduled traffic. The majority of traffic at FTY is local or transient light GA aircraft. Various business jets and on-demand cargo carriers visit FTY on an infrequent basis. Hawker-Beechcraft maintains a sales and repair center at FTY, so King Airs and BeechJets are common.

Facilities and Transportation
No public transit is available at FTY. FBO restroom and refreshment facilities are available if needed. As with most spotting in the Atlanta area, access is best by automobile.

The DeKalb-Peachtree airport is the primary General Aviation airport for the city of Atlanta, Georgia. Located approximately 8 miles Northeast of downtown, PDK handles the vast majority of corporate and light GA traffic in and out of Atlanta. Smaller GA airports such as Cobb County McCollum Field and Fulton County Brown Field act as relievers, but PDK's three FBOs, parallel runways, and proximity to downtown have it the airport of choice for corporate Atlanta. Luckily, PDK's airport authority looks favorably on spotters and the surrounding community and have provided an excellent location for spotting and aviation recreation.

Official Spotting Locations
Aviation Recreation Area
Just below the airport's control tower is a small aviation-themed park including picnic tables, a playground, and most importantly an elevated grandstand for aircraft viewing. This aviation park is very popular with local families and aircraft spotters alike. On an average weekend it may be difficult to find a place to stand on the grandstand between the transient pilots, families with children, and spotters and enthusiasts all looking for a good view.

The park can be found at the end of Airport Road, automobile parking is available adjacent to the park in front of the Downwind Cafe and the Epps hangar.

When photographing from the grandstand, lighting is ideal from noon to sunset. Late afternoon (4pm-sunset) typically results in perfect crisp, clear lighting on any aircraft movements on the field. Aircraft taxiing on Alpha and Bravo can be effectively photographed with as little an 18-55mm kit lens. Aircraft movements on the 2/20s require longer lenses, 250-400mm for a close crop. The majority of large jet traffic will use 20L/2R, but almost every movement will taxi past the viewing area either taxiing out or heading to parking. If you get lucky and operations are using Runway 34, aircraft will be rotating directly in front of the viewing area, easily within the reach of 100-200mm of lens.

Other Spotting Locations
Downwind Restaurant
The Downwind Restaurant is located directly adjacent to the viewing area, on the second floor of the Epps terminal building. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday and offers reasonable food with an aviation theme. Sit on the outdoor deck and you'll be just feet from the airport at a second-story level. The views from the Downwind are similar to the viewing grandstand, but with additional elevation.

57th Fighter Group Restaurant
The 57th Fighter Group is a WWII theme restaurant located off of Clairmont Road, adjacent to the Runway 9 threshold. Biplanes over Atlanta operates from the back lawn of the restaurant and some picnic tables are available for aircraft viewing.

7041393

Locations to Avoid
Do not park on Flightway Drive or at the Epps FBO parking. Police do not actively patrol around the airport, but will stop to investigate anyone at the fence.

Regular Traffic
PDK has no regularly scheduled traffic, but local and transient GA make the airport very busy on a nice day. On a typical weekend there are about ten jet movements per hour along with upwards of thirty or forty props. Jets range from ubiquitous CitationJets to Gulfstreams and BBJs. Many props are from local flight schools (a wide range of Cessnas, Pipers, and Diamonds) but the occasional warbird or high performance single will make an appearance. Fly-by-night cargo operators such as AirNet fly into PDK, but on no regular or scheduled basis. Some afternoons will be more exciting than others, but PDK will never be "boring."

Facilities and Transportation
PDK is approximately one mile from the Chamblee Station on the MARTA Gold Line, and is served by local MARTA Bus service. As with most destinations in Atlanta, it is probably easiest to arrive by car.

The Spruce Creek Airport is a fly-in community located in Port Orange, Florida just South of Daytona Beach. The Spruce Creek airport is home to almost 800 aircraft, including everything from vintage warbirds to modern GA aircraft to small business jets. The airport is made up of primarily multi-use taxiways which provide access from the runway to the on-airport hangar homes and parking locations, as well as acting as roads and walking paths for the residents of the community. Spruce Creek (like most communities in Florida) is a gated community. Access to the airport is restricted to residents and their guests, but a public restaurant (Downwinds Cafe) is open for lunch and dinner, and access to the community will be granted to the general public to patronize Downwinds. Downwinds cafe is located on the airport's primary thouroughfare (Cessna Blvd, a dual-use taxiway) and is within walking distance of the airport's primary spotting location. Spruce Creek (in this author's humble opinion) offers some of the best General Aviation spotting in Florida.

Official Spotting Locations
"The Big Tree"
A large Southern Oak tree is the primary meeting spot for the Spruce Creek community, and also is one of the best aircraft viewing locations. Located at the intersection of Cessna Blvd. and Runway 5/23, there are multiple benches and picnic tables positioned around the tree and in the surrounding grass area. A chest-high chain link fence separates the common area from the runway, but the fence is only five feet from the runway's edge and only acts as an obstruction to vision for young children. The majority of the runway is not fenced at all, and the barricade in this area is only intended to keep pets and children off of the active runway. The Big Tree is ideal for spoting in the morning when Runway 5 is in use, but it can be used almost all day. The runway becomes backlit in this location approximately an hour beofore sunset, depending on season.
There are a number of benches placed on the North side of the Runway 23 approach end, where Taxiway Lindy-Loop meets the runway. These benches are just feet away from the runway edge, and are not separated from the action by any barriers whatsoever. This location is ideal for spotting in the late afternoon when Runway 23 is in use.
Runway 23 / Taxiway Lima Intersection
There is a small grass area next to the wind sock at the intersection of Runway 23 and Taxiway Lima on the South side of the runway. This area is off-limits to automobiles, but can easily be accessed by foot or bicycle. This location has ideal sunlight when Runway 23 is in use, from the mid-morning (9am onwards, depending on season) to approximately two hours before sunset.
This location is approximately mid-field, and can be used when either runway is in use. The lighting for this location depends on the runway being used, but generally is acceptable any time of the day until two hours prior to sunset.
Anywhere Else on the Airport
Spruce Creek is home to nearly 15 miles of taxiways and other airport surfaces. There are hundreds of hangars, plane ports, and airport parking areas which hide a wide variety of planes. It is probably best to take a bicycle or golf cart to explore some of Spruce Creek's back roads, but there's a good chance that you'll come across something you've never seen before.
6969588
6970337

Regular Traffic
Spruce Creek has no regularly scheduled service, and is a private airport limited to locally based aircraft and invited visitors. The most common aircraft flying at Spruce Creek are Beechcraft Bonanzas and Barons and Vans RVs, but a healthy mix of any modern (and not so modern) General Aviation aircraft fly at Spruce Creek. Notable aircraft based at the Creek include two P-51 Mustangs, a Fokker DR.1 and Sopowith Camel team, a SIAI-Marchetti SF.260, multiple T-28s and T-34s, a handfull of Cessna Citations and a formation display team of Swearingen SX-300s. The largest concentration of flying occurs every Saturday morning, when the "Gaggle Flight" (a group of aircraft that ranges in number between 25 and 50 planes) flies out for Breakfast and returns two or three hours later. A number of organized formation teams exist at the Creek, and can be seen practicing together at almost any time (although the weekends are by far the busiest.)

Facilities and Transportation
Spruce Creek is only accessible by automobile. Once inside the Creek, most taxiways are listed as "aircraft only", but a number of dual use taxiways can get you to the approved spotting areas listed above. Most Spruce Creek residents get around either by bicycle or golf cart, but the entire runway/taxiway complex can be explored by foot as well. When traveling at Spruce Creek, remember to remain clear of the active runway, and that aircraft have the right of way on any taxiway at all times.

"The Big Tree"
A chest-high chain link fence separates the common area from the runway, but the fence is only five feet from the runway's edge and only acts as an obstruction to vision for young children. The Portsmouth International Airport at Pease is a regional airport located just outside of Portsmouth, NH. Although the airport once offered service from Allegiant, Skybus, and PanAm III, there is currently no commercial service to the airport. Pease sees frequent military traffic, as it retains its military capacity as a New Hampshire Air National Guard base. Pease is also home to a corporate charter company utilizing Pilatus PC-12 aircraft, and sees frequent transient traffic from both civil and military users.

Official Spotting Locations
Grafton Drive Dirt Lot
The dirt lot off of Grafton Drive, just Northeast of the approach end of Runway 34 is the most popular aircraft viewing area at Pease. While this location is not officially designated for spotting, it is not uncommon to see a half dozen vehicles parked watching aircraft. Aircraft landing are slightly backlit in this location, but taxiing aircraft can be photographed in the early morning or late afternoon sunlight.

6720228
6523175

Other Spotting Locations
Port City FBO Parking Lot
The parking lot for the Port City Air FBO is separated from the ramp by only a fence. Some parked aircraft may be visible through this fence, as well as other fences around the Northeast side of the airport ramp.

6915100

Arboretum Drive and Short Street
Short Street is (much as its name implies) a small access road that runs to the airport perimeter fence. This is the only location for spotting on the Northwest side of the airport. Sunlight does not favor photography at this location, but it offers a clear overview of the entire airport, as the airport is on an incline, sloping up to this location.

Pease Golf Course
(UNVERIFIED) The Pease Golf Course is directly adjacent to the approach end of Runway 34. This location likely has the best afternoon lighting of anywhere on the airport. I have not personally visited this location, but it appears to be the most popular location on the airport for many spotters who upload to online photography websites.

6556383

Regular Traffic
Pease has no scheduled airline service. Military aircraft and military charters are the biggest users of Pease currently. Pease competes with the Bangor International Airport as a stopover location for transatlantic charters, but sees far less frequent visitors. MD-11s and 737s occasionally stop at Pease for fuel. International military aircraft will often stop at Pease for fuel, joining the regular Air National Guard KC-135 traffic. Alpha Flying Service, a corporate charter company, is also based at Pease, flying a fleet of 30+ Pilatus PC-12 aircraft. These small aircraft appear tiny on the huge ex-military airport, but they do fly frequently.

Facilities and Transportation
Pease has a small FBO building and an international terminal building, both of which lie dormant for the majority of the day. The terminal at Pease only opens for charter aircraft to clear customs since Allegiant Airlines left the airport in 2008. There is no public transportation at Pease, all spotting must be done by automobile or bicycle.

The Hancock-County Bar Harbor Airport is a small regional airport located in Trenton, Maine, just West of the popular tourist destinations of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Bar Harbor is a sleepy airport with limited commercial service during the winter months, but is a bustling corporate hub during the summer tourist months.

Official Spotting Locations
No official spotting locations exist at Bar Harbor.

Other Spotting Locations
Caruso Drive / Terminal Access Road
Parking along Caruso Drive (the road which accesses the main terminal) provides views over the fence of landing and departing traffic on Bar Harbor's Runway 22. A zoom lens is reccomended at this location.

6906835

Terminal Parking Area
The terminal parking lot is separated from the ramp by only a fence. Shooting through the fence (or through the terminal windows) provides excellent views of all sorts of parked corporate and private aircraft, as well as the scheduled US Airways turboprop service.

6906834
6950525

Aerial Sightseeing Companies
Multiple aerial sightseeing companies have seasonal locations located along Bar Harbor Road on the Southwest side of the airport. These locations provide decent views of both the main runway, and the sightseeing operations themselves, operating Biplane and Glider traffic as well as common GA aircraft.

6906843

Regular Traffic
Bar Harbor sees only limited commercial service from US Airways Express on Saab 340 aircraft. Bar Harbor becomes a bustling airport for commercial and private traffic during the summer months when the ramp becomes crowded with aircraft ranging from Beechcraft Bonanzas to the largest Gulfstream jets. During the peak summer season, Bar Harbor can see an average of two jet movements per hour, with extensive GA and sightseeing traffic flying all day.

Facilities and Transportation
The Bar Harbor Airport has minimal terminal facilities and no public transportation available. Almost all spotting around the Bar Harbor Airport must be done either by automobile or by aircraft.

The Bangor International Airport is a regional airport located in Bangor, Maine. The Bangor airport sees light service from several US Legacy airlines, made up of primarily light Regional Jet traffic. The airport is also an active Maine Air National Guard Base and a popular diversion destination for transatlantic flights and troop charters. Bangor often acts as a port of entry for US soldiers returning to the states, seeing 2-3 widebody charter aircraft or diversions on an average day.

Official Spotting Locations
Maine Air Museum
The only semi-official spotting location at the Bangor Airport is the parking lot for the Maine Aviation Historical Society (Maine Air Museum) on Maine Ave, just East of the main terminal building. The museum itself is home to a small collection of aircraft and memorabilia, but the museum's location on the airport grounds provides good views of the overall airport environment and runway. Since the museum is separated by a fence from the airport and is located on the North of the airport, photography is not ideal.

Other Spotting Locations
Odin Road
Odin Road runs under the approach end for Bangor's Runway 33. Pulling off to the side of the road just south of the runway, at the driveway for the Telford Aviation hangar provides great views of aircraft landing on 33. Sunlight on landing aircraft is perfect in the afternoon, becoming ideal in the late afternoon after 3:00pm (depending on season.) Telford Aviation is also often home to dozens of turboprop aircraft in various states is disrepair. While all aircraft are located on airport grounds, many can be viewed from public property.

Runway Road
(UNVERIFIED) Runway Road on the West side of the airport appears to be the reciprocal of the Odin Road location, ideal during morning sunlight. I have not personally visited this location, but posts on Jetphotos and other sites seem to suggest that it is acceptable for spotting. Runway Road is visible on sattelite maps of the area, explore at your own risk.

Places to Avoid
Maine Air National Guard Base
The far West side of the terminal/hangar complex is gated and is part of the Maine Air Reserve Base. This area will be patrolled by Military Personell and access is not permitted.

Regular Traffic
Bangor is served commercially by Delta Connection and US Airways Express primarily with Regional Jet equipment. Allegiant Air serves Bangor on a semi-daily basis using MD-80 series equipment. The Maine Air National Guard flies KC-135 tankers in and out of Bangor regularly. Both US and Foreign military aircraft often use Bangor as a layover location, often seeing aircraft ranging from C-130s to Panavia Tornados. Bangor also sees semi-regular charter stops from North American Airways, Omni Airways, and Polet Flight with B757, MD-11/DC-10, and AN-124 equipment.

Facilities and Transportation
Bangor is easily accessible by automobile from Interstate 95. The airport terminal features limited food and other facilities.

Spotting opportunities at the airport are limited, but there are a number of sites around the airport perimeter which offer views of aircraft movement.

Official Spotting Locations
South Dirt Lot
The Jetport has set up an official spotting area to the South of the airport perimeter, a dirt lot just off of Westbrook Street and Aviation Blvd. Apart from the fence, the view of the entire airport is more or less un-obstructed, so it is a good place to park and simply watch aircraft.

The roundabout is heavily posted with "No Parking" signs, and local law enforcement frequently asks visitors to move up the hill to the approved spotting location. If you park elsewhere and walk to the fence line, law enforcement should not hassle you.
The top story of the terminal parking garage offers relatively good views of the airport action at all times of the day. Unfortunately, the runways and taxiways are backlit for all but the earliest summer hours. If your aim is to take photographs, an early morning (i.e. 5:30am-7am) trip is a must. For non-photographic reasons, the garage roof offers the most all-inclusive viewing of anywhere on the airport, save the terminal itself.

No official spotting locations exist on the Daytona Beach airport.

6779761

Locations to Avoid
The Volusia County Sheriff's office takes pride in removing spotters from the airport perimeter. If hassled by the police, simply move along; they do not respond well to logic and reason. If your aim is to avoid the police, stick to Embry-Riddle's campus, otherwise be prepared to be told not to park near the airport fence.

Regular Traffic
**CRJ-200 and CRJ-700 operated by Air Wisconsin & PSA Airlines

Facilities and Transportation
The airport is connected to the VOTRAN bus network, but service is sporadic and limited. Outside of the Embry-Riddle campus, a car is necessary for any spotting.

Official Spotting Locations
South Dirt Lot
The Jetport has set up an official spotting area to the South of the airport perimeter, a dirt lot just off of Westbrook Street and Aviation Blvd. Apart from the fence, the view of the entire airport is more or less un-obstructed, so it is a good place to park and simply watch aircraft. Example photos from the official spotting location (taken standing atop a vehicle with a 55-250mm lens) can be found below.

The roundabout is heavily posted with "No Parking" signs, and local law enforcement frequently asks visitors to move up the hill to the approved spotting location. If you park elsewhere and walk to the fence line, law enforcement should not hassle you.
