The only international airport within the province of Manitoba, Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is a major transportation hub for Manitoba. A large number of airlines fly to the airport, and it is a hub for several smaller carriers. Decent spotting oppertuniteis are available, mostly due to the nearby Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada.
Ness Avenue Park
Just north of the Tim Hortons on the corner of Ness and Mount Royal there is a field, over which is the approach for runway 36. Since the approach is directly over the field, you'll mostly get the underside of the airplanes but since the field is decently sized, you can move to the side of the fight path, allowing for more side shots. Due to this, lighting is good pretty much all day (you can adjust your angle to match the sun). Parking is available by the Tim Hortons, or by Silver Avenue. The Yellow Ribbon Greenway offers access by bike/foot.

Brookside Boulevard
If winds are coming from the south and runway 18 is in use for arrivals, arrivals can be seen along Brookside Boulevard. Running parallel to the runway, there are no stopping signs and not much shoulder on the road. However, there is a small bridge just north of Logan Avenue that is perfect for viewing arrivals. In addition, on the corner of Brookside and Notre Dame Avenue there is a small place to stop, however the tall fence makes ground-level imagery difficult. These locations are more morning-orientated because of the lighting.
The fifth busiest airport in Canada, Edmonton International Airport is a major hub for northern Canada. As such, it is a hub for Canadian North and First Air, as well as ultra low-cost-carriers Swoop and Flair Airlines. However, Edmonton International Airport has overall subpar spotting opportunities, especially when compared to Calgary International Airport.
Official Spotting Locations
Aviation Viewpark Leduc Chamber of Commerce
This is the only sanctioned spotting location at CYEG, it is right in-line with Runway 30 which makes take-off shooting difficult but works very well for landings. In the winter months, this location is perfectly lit from morning to evening. As Summer commences, however, this spot is only useful after approximately 2:00pm.

6310653

Other Spotting Locations
Highway 2 Service Road
After turning off at the Nisku Exit on Highway 2 (also known as the Highway 19 exit) a spotter will immediately find a turn onto the "highway II service road". This location is good for both landings and take-offs on Runway 20. It is, however, only useful during daylight hours.

6195812

Range Road 254
Further down highway 19 and immediately past the Castrol Raceway, a spotter can make a left turn onto Range Road 254, travelling the entire length of Runway 20 there are some turnouts along the road for parking. Take-offs from Runway 20, landings on 02, and landings on runway 12 can be shot with great ease at all times of day.
A relatively quiet airport but with good facilities and opportunities for spotting/photography. Scheduled traffic is fairly limited, at least in terms of reach - Air Canada Express, WestJet/WestJet Encore, Horizon, Air Canada, Air North, Alaska, Flair, Delta, United Express and some local commuter carriers and charter airlines all visit, but mostly only domestic routes. Can be slow at times, but one of the best places to get close to Dash-8s, Canadair jets etc. as well as the larger 737s/A320s.

Official Spotting Locations
Terminal
1. Public viewing area on the 3rd floor of the terminal. There are general views of gates 9, and surrounding apron (gates 6/7). Access is from a elevator behind the Tim Hortons. Glass fronted, facing North. A few seats. Note: If you're past security, you can get the same view as the public viewing area by going to the Gate 9/10 boarding area and using the window there.

2. External viewing "mound" to the left of the terminal. A small raised area overlooking the West ramp and taxiway. Tables and seats. Photography (50-100mm) possible over or through the fence. Note: As of Oct. 2007 the area has been reopened, but is not "officially" opened for spotting.

Other Spotting Locations
Hospital Hill
A small hill north of the airport with views of runway 09/27. Great to get pictures of traffic landing on 09 or taking off on 27, has overlooking views of the airport. Follow Mills road along The Flight Path Trail, and park at the bottom of the hill by the Holy Trinity Church. At the top of the hill there is a "Lost Airmen of the Empire" memorial with benches and water. The fence gets in the way a little, but overall great photography.

East Hangars
Two left turns out of the terminal onto Canora Rd. leads to the East hangars. The main road curves right leaving a small cul-de-sac. This overlooks the helicopter base, the FBO ramp and the threshold of 27. Good spotting and photography from here, but no facilities - the locals bring their cars. A step ladder may help for photographers as the fence is quite high.

Tulista Park
A park in Sidney near the Anacordes ferry, across the road from the Cedarwood Inn & Suites. No runways are viewable here, but traffic landing on 27 or taking off on 09 are viewable. You'll mostly get underside shots of the aircraft, but with decent positioning side shots are possible. Benches, bathrooms, and water.

Pat Bay
A small park under the approach to runway 09. A little lower than the airport, no runways are visible here but 09 traffic passes directly overhead. A short walk along the beach gives a few opportunities for photos but nothing really outstanding. Also a small vehicle ramp access gate just south of the park offers some nice views when 09 is active, and generally no hassle from the authorities if you choose to park there, as long as you're not blocking access.

West Hangars
Turn right out of the terminal. The Forests base is located here and occasional air tankers are present in season. The Air Force has a hangar full of geriatric Sea Kings but it is firmly shut most of the time, in which case some taxiing shots of 09 traffic can be had from the parking lot.
All terminal facilities are open to non-passengers.

For foot/bike transportation, use the Flight Path Trail - it's a trail surrounding the airport, offering access to all of the spotting locations, including the passenger terminal. In front the short term parking area of the passenger terminal, there is a bike maintenance area with pumps, tools, and storage.

For bus transportation, there is a sporadic bus service (70B) from Victoria to the ferry dock which calls at the airport and is served by BC Transit routes 79 and 83.

Edward H. LaBorde Viewing Area
A paved lot/park located to the West of the main (17R/35L) runway on Aviation Road. All movements on this runway can be seen and photographed (150-300mm), although the sun is bothersome before noon. Traffic using 10/28 is too far away to be identified from here, and traffic on 16L/34R can be identified, but is too far away for photography.

From Deerfoot Trail, take the McKnight Boulevard exit, turn left on Aviation Boluevard, right on Aviaton Road, and follow the road until you reach the lot.

Aerial Place (WestJet hangar)
A small dirt lot just past the WestJet hangar. Only good for logging 10/28 traffic as there is a double fence preventing photography.

Terminal
The food court has large windows from which all airline movements can be logged.
Some photography is possible through the tinted glass and also from the roadway to the East of the terminal.

Cargo Area
Further down 78 Avenue the road ends at the cargo facility and fire station. Movements on both runways can be logged from here, but double fencing again prevents photography.

Picnic tables and a nearby gas station/store.

Turn right out of the airport and right again on 78 Avenue then left towards the hangar.

Other Spotting Locations
South Hangars
Off McCall Way. From an employee car park at the end of McTavish Road movements on 16/34 and 07/25 can be logged. Good photos of 16 departures until late afternoon.
Remember this is private property but weekends should pose no problems.

Airport Trail
There are a few locations off this road for runway 16 arrivals.
Many are dirt roads, the best of which is 15 Street and this area is probably of interest to only the most dedicated photographer.

Locations to Avoid
The only international airport within the province of Manitoba, Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is a major transportation hub for Manitoba. A large number of airlines fly to the airport, and it is a hub for several smaller carriers. Decent spotting oppertuniteis are availible, mostly due to the nearby Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada.

Locations to Avoid
Air Force Parking Lot
If the Sea Kings are active, you may be approached by a military guard. Depending on his mood you may be asked to leave.
Facilities and Transportation
All terminal facilities are open to non-passengers.

For foot/bike transportation, use the Flight Path Trail - it's a trail surrounding the airport, offering access to all of the spotting locations, including the passenger terminal. In front the short term parking area of the passenger terminal, there is a bike maintenance area with pumps, tools, and storage.

For bus transportation, there is a sporadic bus service (70B) from Victoria to the ferry dock which calls at the airport and is served by BC Transit routes 79 and 83.

For bus transportation, there is a sporadic bus service (70B) from Victoria to the ferry dock which calls at the airport and is served by BC Transit routes 79 and 83.

Locations to Avoid
Air Force Parking Lot
If the Sea Kings are active, you may be approached by a military guard. Depending on his mood you may be asked to leave.
