There is an official viewing deck atop the administrative building to the east of terminal A. 
Entrance fee is 2 € as of JUL-2012. Access is through one automated turnstile 24/7; money changer is available. 
It is either an elevator ride up or 140 steps to climb. This gives an estimation on how high you will be above the ground. 
Primary view is onto the civil apron, but in fact the whole field (both runways and the extensive cargo area) can be overlooked from there; however any aircraft parked on the cargo apron will be too distant for photography.
 
 
A flight information monitor is provided, detailling even the aircraft type and the runway an aircraft will use for departure and landing, but it is limited to passenger and General Aviation movements. Cargo movements are not listed, as are (US-)military charters stopping at LEJ for fuel & supply of food. On the other hand, movements of German Airforce are listed. 
 
On the negative side: There is no shelter from the elements at all on the viewing deck !
 
Leaving the area is via another turnstile, but you need to press a button before the turnstile will move.

Cyprus is part of the European Union; it has adopted the Euro as currency. Sport clubs participate in European championships. Would it be an option to categorize Cyprus both in "Europe" and "Middle East" - in a similar way as Russia is categorized as "Europe" and "Asia" ? This place gets very busy during the weekend, as locals flock out to the restaurants. Parking no longer is free (2 € / 12 hours), but enforcement seem to vary.
However, the sun will hamper photography.
Walk along the beach to get a better angle.

South of airfield near desalination plant. Can be reached by car via Pervolia. Take road northeast along the beach. Road ends at desalination plant. Depending on road conditions, continue on rough road or on the beach. Views are distant for photography unless you cut across some fields.

There is a lot of construction work going on in order to expand the airport under "Plan Malaga" (as of Summer 2008, this shall go on for another few years). 
Road traffic flow changes from time to time. 
The railway station is planned to be relocated once the new terminal is constructed. 
A new (roughly parallel) runway is under construction north-east of the original airport.

In the old terminal 1 right to check-in counters there is a huge window where you can spot. But taking pictures is quite difficult caused by a two glass window. 
This terminal also features a self-service restaurant giving you a view of a small portion of the apron and the action on the runway. The seating area of BurgerKing next door gives even less views.

===Departure Area===

The second spot would be in the departure area. At the end of the terminal (close to gate 20) there is also a huge window front (just one glass) but this is green/yellow colored.

===West of the airport===
If you have got a car at hand, go to the village of Churriaba (enter "Calle de Rigoberta Menchú, 29004, Malaga, Malaga, Andalusia, Spain" as destination in route planners). The parking bay at the upper end of this sloping road gives you some good views (but rather distant for photography) of the apron and action on the single runway as you are on higher terrain. A building is obstructing views of the south-eastern part of the apron, but as of late 2010, this apron is rarely used now, as traffic has shifted to new Terminal 3. Aircraft parked at the far side of Terminal 3 will be out of view. 
Down the road you are directly the airport fence, will loose some overview, but will gain views of the apron (including the military apron) as well as about half of the runway. It is possible to park a few cars there. 
As you are west of the airport, the sun will not bother photography.

===Visitor Terrace===

There is a visitors terrace in the building connecting terminals A and B. It is part of the exhibition [http://www.weltderluftfahrt.de Welt der Luftfahrt] (World of Aviation), which opened in October 2008. Access is from departure level. The minimum entrance fee now is €2,50 which includes part of the exhibition.

From the visitor terrace you have a view over the apron of Terminal A and parts of Terminal B. Aircraft on some stands of Terminal C are visible in some distance as is the remote parking area. You can take pictures of aircraft taxiing to the runways and landing or departing on 09R/27L. The disadvantages are that you have to photograph through glass (dirty!) and you face the sun for most of the day.

===Position No 2 "Parkhaus Nord"===

Leave the motorway A352 at the sign "Flughafen" (airport). Drive along the road and follow the signs to "Parkhaus Nord" (Car Park North), but be aware that it is usually closed off-season. This location is within walking distance of the terminals. When the car park is open, a free shuttle bus connects it to the terminals.

The multi-storey Car Park near RWY 27R is good for pictures when 27R is in use and aircraft use this runway for landing as well as for take-off. When 09L is in use, it is possible to take pictures of aircraft after take-off but most of the planes will be too high. The light is good from sunrise until about 5 p.m. Lenses between 150 and 400mm are recommended for shots of the runway and 70mm to 180mm for shots of the taxiway.

The view is obstructed by a new built aircraft hangar. There is only a small gap for max 3 spotters to take photos of the final approach.

===Position No 8 "Schulenburg"===

Drive in the towards the airport and do a left turn at the "Münchener Straße" (if you are coming from the airport, do a right turn). Drive along this road until you reach a small village named "Schulenburg". In this village you take the first road ("Dorfstraße") to the right. Drive this road until the end and you will see the runway in front of you. You can walk along the airport fence from here, too.

From the point "Schulenburg" you can take pictures of aircrafts which depart or land on 09R. You need a ladder (3 steps) at this position! The light is good from sunrise until 5 p.m. Lenses between 70 and 400mm are recommended, although 200 to 400mm lenses are only necessary for pictures of aircraft parked on the western apron.

===Position No 10 "Schulenburg-Nord"===

This point is located in Schulenburg-Nord. To get there, follow the instructions given for point 8, but instead of turning right at the first road in Schulenburg, take the second one (Hannoversche Straße). You have to follow this road up to Schulenburg Nord, where you have to turn left. Now you are heading directly towards a parking lot next to the taxiway.
From this point you have a great view across the northern runway (09L/27R) an its taxiways. For shots of the runway it is good to have at least a 300mm lens (for aircraft down to CRJ-size). The taxiway however is very close here, so you really need a wide angle lens (e.g. 30mm for a Yak42).
If RWY 09L is in use, every plane will pass this spot during landing and take off, but smaller planes landing on 27R often leave the runway before they reach this spot.
To get clear of the fence, a 3-step-ladder is necessary here. The sun is in your back from early morning until around 5 pm.

===Münchner Straße - New spotting hill===
For those in a hurry, it used to be possible to get a quick glance at the apron and traffic on runway 09R/27L from the parking strips along Münchner Straße (located south of the airport), but more and more buildings (mainly cargo centres) are blocking the view these days. It is still possible to park there and walk closer to the perimeter fence, but spot #8 (mentioned above) has the advantage of no thru-traffic and parking space closer to the fence.

Due to several new built warehouses the view from Münchner Straße is obstructed. Also it is no longer possible to cross the fields to get closer to the fence at most places. But a new spotting hill has been banked up between point 1 and 7. From this hill you have a good view on 09R/27L and the terminals. Park your car near the turn at the westerly end of Münchner Straße and walk the footpath beside the warehouse. A step ladder is not needed and the light is good from 10 am to 5 pm in summer.

===End of runways===
Those who like to stand directly underneath approaching (landing) aircraft can do so easily on 3 of the 4 ends at HAJ. 
The far end of runway 27R is reached from Engelbostel via Resser Straße. It is possible to park a car there without problems. 
The far end of runway 27L can be reached on foot from above mentioned positions #8 and #10. When coming from #10, park your car in the village itself, do not drive all the way to the designated area. 
The far end of runway 09L is reached from Evershorst. You need to park your car in the very small village, as many roads are not open to public vehicles. On the road leading east from Evershorst to Kaltenweide, a bridge leads across motorway A352. From there head-on shots of approaching aircraft are possible. 
The far end of runway 09R is the least good accessible one, as many areas are fenced off (being used as private parking lots for cars and trucks). Keep an open eye here and observe signs, as the situation changes rather frequently.

==Locations to Avoid==

If you use the positions mentioned above you shouldn't get any problems. Sometimes the airport security might bother you because your car might be parked in a wrong place, but if you tell them you are a plane spotter, they won't bother you.

HAJ is the central air hub for the 25.000 British soldiers based in Germany and therefore frequently used by the Royal Air Force. Taking pictures of military aircraft is okay but taking pictures of military personnel or cargo should be avoided. It is an unwritten law at HAJ not to point cameras with big lenses at military personnel. This is to make sure that the BFG (British Forces Germany) feel safe and respected and are willing to continue their handling at HAJ in the open.

Please note, that it is forbidden to use an airband scanner in Germany, but use rarely get prosecuted. Just turn it off if the police approaches.

In the old terminal 1 right to check-in counters there is a huge window where you can spot. But taking pictures is quite difficult caused by a two glass window. 
This terminal also features a self-service restaurant giving you a view of a small portion of the apron and the action on the runway. The seating area of BurgerKing next door gives even less views.

===Departure Area===

The second spot would be in the departure area. At the end of the terminal (close to gate 20) there is also a huge window front (just one glass) but this is green/yellow colored.

===West of the airport===
If you have got a car at hand, go to the village of Churriaba (enter "Calle de Rigoberta Menchú, 29004, Malaga, Malaga, Andalusia, Spain" as destination in route planners). The parking bay at the upper end of this sloping road gives you some good views (but rather distant for photography) of the apron and action on the single runway as you are on higher terrain. As of November 2009 a new building is obstructing views of the south-eastern part of the apron. Also, aircraft parked at the new terminal will be out of view partially. 
Down the road you are directly the airport fence, but will loose some overview, but will gain views of the apron, including the military apron. It is possible to park a few cars there. 
As you are west of the airport, the sun will not bother photography.

There are no views from inside the terminal building landside.

Once airside, there are windows in each of the four gate areas, but with limited views onto small parts of the apron. Some locations give views onto one of the runways, too, but none is good for photography as windows are tinted.

===Parking garage===

For the spotter in a hurry, the top level of the car park opposite the terminal building can serve as a vantage point, but views are restricted to the southwestern ends of the runways and some longterm remote stands.

===Around the airport===

There are a number of locations around the airport's perimeter, but to get there a car or a bike are recommended.

#The end of Camino de Son Fangos at "39.548065, 2.707282" (coordinates for google maps) can be reached on foot from the nearby Carrefour supermarket, but views from there aren't too good. Do not get fooled by Google maps: The camino is interrupted by the airport perimeter in direction north and you cannot head directly to location #2 (even on foot) !
#West of runway 24R on Carrer Lluchmajor "39.554784,2.719846". Do not go there on foot, as when coming from the west, you will have to bypass Palma's "slum" at Son Banya (a place not recommended to be after nightfall). Growing bushes on the other side of the airport fence more and more are obstructing views.
#Much better is a location further north that can be reached from the village of Son Ferriol "39.560280, 2.730200". This is a dead end with not more than 2 cars to park; keep the entrance to the farm clear ! Stay off the private properties including the fields itself. This location offers good views of runway 24R and western / northern apron. Traffic on runway 24L can be monitored, too, but not much more.
#Northeast of the airport: With runway 24L used for arrivals you can also park at location "39.559321, 2.769432" and have landing aircraft buzz right overhead you. The sun should be no problem for head-on shots.
#With runway 06R used for departures, try to head for the park at Poligono Son Oms (walking distance from the Playa de Palma): "39.539926,2.735167".

==Locations to Avoid==

After nightfall, stay away from the area of "Son Banya" to the west of the airfield (see Spotting location 2 above) or drive through quickly.

==Regular Traffic==
During busy summer season almost every carrier in Europe flies to PMI.

Winter is considerably less busy with pax numbers falling to a 10th of summer peak numbers.

The single biggest carrier in PMI is Air Berlin for whom PMI is a hub airport.

Only runways 06L/24R and 06R/24L are used regularly; runway 06C/24C only serves as a taxiway nowadays (therefore some sources list 2, others 3 runways, but the aerial view reveals that that strip of concrete is still maintained as a runway).

Unless there is construction work going on or in case of emergency closure of runway 06L/24R, runway 24L is not used for departures and 06R is not used for landings. This is in order to shield the village of C'an Pastilla from excessive aircraft noise (even now it gets loud there). The only execption I have witnessed sofar were military flights by a CASA turbo-prop.

There is a visitors terrace in the building connecting terminals A and B. It is part of the exhibition [http://www.weltderluftfahrt.de Welt der Luftfahrt] (World of Aviation), which opened in October 2008. Access is from departure level. The minimum entrance fee now is €2,50 which includes part of the exhibition.

From the visitor terrace you have a view over the apron of Terminal A and parts of Terminal B. Aircraft on some stands of Terminal C are visible in some distance as is the remote parking area. You can take pictures of aircraft taxiing to the runways and landing or departing on 09R/27L. The disadvantages are that you have to photograph through glass (dirty!) and you face the sun for most of the day.

===Position No 2 "Parkhaus Nord"===

Leave the motorway A352 at the sign "Flughafen" (airport). Drive along the road and follow the signs to "Parkhaus Nord" (Car Park North), but be aware that it is usually closed off-season. This location is within walking distance of the terminals. When the car park is open, a free shuttle bus connects it to the terminals.

The multi-storey Car Park near RWY 27R is good for pictures when 27R is in use and aircraft use this runway for landing as well as for take-off. When 09L is in use, it is possible to take pictures of aircraft after take-off but most of the planes will be too high. The light is good from sunrise until about 5 p.m. Lenses between 150 and 400mm are recommended for shots of the runway and 70mm to 180mm for shots of the taxiway.

===Position No 8 "Schulenburg"===

Drive in the towards the airport and do a left turn at the "Münchener Straße" (if you are coming from the airport, do a right turn). Drive along this road until you reach a small village named "Schulenburg". In this village you take the first road ("Dorfstraße") to the right. Drive this road until the end and you will see the runway in front of you. You can walk along the airport fence from here, too.

From the point "Schulenburg" you can take pictures of aircrafts which depart or land on 09R. You need a ladder (3 steps) at this position! The light is good from sunrise until 5 p.m. Lenses between 70 and 400mm are recommended, although 200 to 400mm lenses are only necessary for pictures of aircraft parked on the western apron.

===Position No 10 "Schulenburg-Nord"===

This point is located in Schulenburg-Nord. To get there, follow the instructions given for point 8, but instead of turning right at the first road in Schulenburg, take the second one (Hannoversche Straße). You have to follow this road up to Schulenburg Nord, where you have to turn left. Now you are heading directly towards a parking lot next to the taxiway.
From this point you have a great view across the northern runway (09L/27R) an its taxiways. For shots of the runway it is good to have at least a 300mm lens (for aircraft down to CRJ-size). The taxiway however is very close here, so you really need a wide angle lens (e.g. 30mm for a Yak42).
If RWY 09L is in use, every plane will pass this spot during landing and take off, but smaller planes landing on 27R often leave the runway before they reach this spot.
To get clear of the fence, a 3-step-ladder is necessary here. The sun is in your back from early morning until around 5 pm.

===Münchner Straße===
For those in a hurry, it used to be possible to get a quick glance at the apron and traffic on runway 09R/27L from the parking strips along Münchner Straße (located south of the airport), but more and more buildings (mainly cargo centres) are blocking the view these days. It is still possible to park there and walk closer to the perimeter fence, but spot #8 (mentioned above) has the advantage of no thru-traffic and parking space closer to the fence.

===End of runways===
Those who like to stand directly underneath approaching (landing) aircraft can do so easily on 3 of the 4 ends at HAJ. 
The far end of runway 27R is reached from Engelbostel via Resser Straße. It is possible to park a car there without problems. 
The far end of runway 27L can be reached on foot from above mentioned positions #8 and #10. When coming from #10, park your car in the village itself, do not drive all the way to the designated area. 
The far end of runway 09L is reached from Evershorst. You need to park your car in the very small village, as many roads are not open to public vehicles. On the road leading east from Evershorst to Kaltenweide, a bridge leads across motorway A352. From there head-on shots of approaching aircraft are possible. 
The far end of runway 09R is the least good accessible one, as many areas are fenced off (being used as private parking lots for cars and trucks). Keep an open eye here and observe signs, as the situation changes rather frequently.

==Locations to Avoid==

If you use the positions mentioned above you shouldn't get any problems. Sometimes the airport security might bother you because your car might be parked in a wrong place, but if you tell them you are a plane spotter, they won't bother you.

HAJ is the central air hub for the 25.000 British soldiers based in Germany and therefore frequently used by the Royal Air Force. Taking pictures of military aircraft is okay but taking pictures of military personnel or cargo should be avoided. It is an unwritten law at HAJ not to point cameras with big lenses at military personnel. This is to make sure that the BFG (British Forces Germany) feel safe and respected and are willing to continue their handling at HAJ in the open.

Please note, that it is forbidden to use an airband scanner in Germany, but use rarely get prosecuted. Just turn it off if the police approaches.

The official observation area is located to the west of the airfield at the intersection of Vultee Blvd and Airfreight Blvd; it needs to be accessed off SR153 (Briley Parkway). Runways 2L/20R and 2C/20C are fairly close by, 13/31 is visible, traffic on 2R/20L is distant but can be monitored. The terminal is approximately 1 mile away. There are air cargo areas on both sides of the parking lot. Embraer's facility is located to the left, but out of sight.

Do not get fooled by the many destinations shown on the airports website ! Most of these destinations will require a connection at some hub !

Traffic in peak season has B737/A319 as the largest aircraft (from AB and X3), while Lufthansa flies their regional jets to GWT. AB-affiliate LGW flew their Dornier D228 to GWT during summer 2008. Some even smaller props are employed to fly the local equivilent to "Essential Air Service" mainly to Hamburg and/or Uetersen.

There is a visitors terrace in the building connecting terminals A and B. It is part of a exhibition (museum with hands-on exhibits opened in October 2008 ( http://www.weltderluftfahrt.de ) Access is from departure level.
Minimum entrance fee now is €2,50 which includes part of the exhibition.

From the Visitor Terrace you have a view over the apron of Terminal A and a parts of Terminal B. Aircraft on some stands of terminal C are visible is some distance as is the remote parking area. Beside you can take pictures of aircraft taxiing to the runways. Also pictures of aircrafts which are landing or departing on 09R/27L are possible. The disadvantages are that you have to photograph through glass (dirty!) and the light is bad nearly the whole day.

===Position No 2 "Parkhaus Nord"===

You reach this position if you exit the motorway at the sign "Flughafen" (airport). Drive along the road and follow the signs to "Parkhaus Nord" (Car Park North), but be aware that it usually is closed off-season.
This location can also be reached on foot from the terminals or by parking shuttle (if the car park is open).

The multi-storey Car Park near rwy 27R is good for pictures when runways 27 are in use and aircraft take the right runway for landings or take-off! It's possible to photograph aircraft after take-off on 09L but most of the stuff will be too high. The light is good from sunrise until 5p.m. I would recommend lenses from 150mm up to 400mm for shots on the runway and 70mm up to 180mm for shots on the taxiway

===Position No 8 "Schulenburg"===

Drive in the direction of the airport and do a left turn at the "Münchener Straße" (if you are coming from the airport, do a right turn). Drive along this road until you reach a small village named "Schulenburg". In this village you take the first road ("Dorfstraße") to the right. Drive this road until the end and you will see the runway in front of you. You can walk along the airport fence from here, too.

From the point "Schulenburg" you can take pictures of aircrafts which depart or land on 09R. You need a ladder (3 steps) at this position! The light is good from sunrise until 5p.m. I would recommed lenses from 70mm up to 400mm.

===Position No 10 "Schulenburg-Nord"===

This point is located in Schulenburg-Nord. To get there, follow the instructions given for point 8, but instead of turning right at the first road in Schulenburg, take the second one (Hannoversche Straße). You have to follow this road until Schulenburg Nord, where you have to turn left. Now you are heading directly towards a small parking lot next to the taxiway.
From this point you have a great view over the northern runway (09L/27R) an its taxiways. For shots on the runway it's good to have at least a 300mm lens (for aircraft down to CRJ-size). The taxiway however is very close here, so you really need a wide angle lens (e.g. 30mm for a Yak42).
If RWY 09L is in use, every plane will pass this spot during landing and take off, but smaller planes landing on 27R often leave the runway before they reach this spot.
To get clear of the fence, a 3-step-ladder is necessary here. The sun is in your back from early morning until around 5 pm.

===Münchner Straße===
For those in a hurry, it used to be possible to get a quick glance at the apron and traffic on runway 09R/27L from the parking strips along Münchner Straße (located south of the airport), but more and more buildings (mainly freight forwarders) meanwhile are blocking those views. Still it is possible to park there and walk closer to the airport fence, but above mentioned spot #8 has the advantage of no thru-traffic (definitely no trucks).

===End of runways===
Those who like to stand directly underneath approaching (landing) aircraft can do so easily on 3 of the 4 ends at HAJ. 
The far end of runway 27R is reached from Engelbostel via Resser Straße. It is possible to park a car there without problems. 
The far end of runway 27L can be reached on foot from above mentioned positions #8 and #10. When coming from #10, park your car in the village itself, do not drive all the way to the designated area. 
The far end of runway 09L is reached from Evershorst. You need to park your car in the very small village, as many roads are not open to public vehicles. On the road leading east from Evershorst to Kaltenweide, a bridge leads across motorway A352. From there head-on shots of approaching aircraft are possible. 
The far end of runway 09R is the least good accessible one, as many areas are fenced off (being used as private parking lots for cars and trucks). Keep an open eye here and observe signs, as the situation changes rather frequently here.

If you use the positions mentioned above you shouldn't get any problems.

Sometimes the airport security might bother you because your car might be parked at a wrong place and so on, but if you speak to them and explain them your concern they'll accept you!

Taking pictures of military aircraft is okay; taking pictures of military personnel should be avoided. It is a unwritten law at HAJ to not pointing cameras with big lenses at military personnel. This is to make sure that the BFG (Brtish Forces in Germany) feel safe and respected and are willing to continue their handling at HAJ in the open.

Please note, that it's forbidden to use an airband scanner in Germany, but use rarely get prosecuted. Just turn it off if the police approaches.

It should be clear that aircraft always operate into the wind, thus specifying runway usage makes no sense, if there are only parallel runways. Only sense would be to point out in case one of the parallel runways primarily is used for departures only and the other for arrivals only. (Procedures like being in place at LHR or CDG).

In the old terminal 1 right to check-in counters there is a huge window where you can spot. But taking pictures is quite difficult caused by a two glass window.

===Departure Area===

The second spot would be in the departure area. At the end of the terminal (close to gate 20) there is also a huge window front (just one glass) but this is green/yellow colored.

===West of the airport===
If you have got a car at hand, go to the village of Churriaba (enter "Calle de Rigoberta Menchú, 29004, Malaga, Malaga, Andalusia, Spain" as destination in route planners). The parking bay at the upper end of this sloping road gives you some good views (but rather distant for photography) of the apron and action on the single runway as you are on higher tearrain. 
Down the road you are directly the airport fence, but will loose some overview, but will gain views of the military apron. 
As you are west of the airport, the sun will not bother photography.

Drive along this road until you reach a small village named "Schulenburg". In this village you take the first road ("Dorfstraße") to the right. From the point "Schulenburg" you can take pictures of aircrafts which depart or land on 09R. You need a ledder (3 steps) at this position! The light is good from sunrise until 5p.m. I would recommed lenses from 70mm up to 400mm.

This point is located in Schulenburg-Nord. To get there, follow the instructions given for point 8, but instead of turning right at the first road in Schulenburg, take the second one (Hannoversche Straße). You have to follow this road until Schulenburg Nord, where You have to turn left. Now You are heading directly towards a small parking lot next to the taxiway.
From this point You have a great view over the northern runway (09L/27R) an its taxiways. For shots on the runway it's good to have at least a 300mm lens (for aircraft down to CRJ-size). The taxiway is very close here, so You really need a wide angle lens (e.g. 30mm for a Yak42).
If RWY 09L is in use, every plane will pass this spot during landing and take off, but smaller planes landing on 27R often leave the runway before they reach this spot.
To get clear of the fence, a 3-step-ladder is necessary here. The sun is in Your back from early morning until around 5 pm.

Sometimes the airport security might bother you because your car might be parked at a wrong place and so on, but if you speak to them and explain them your concern they'll accept you! 
 
Taking pictures of military aircraft is okay; taking pictures of military personell should be avoided. It is a unwritten law at HAJ to not pointing cameras with big lenses at military personell. This is to make sure, that the BFG (Brtish Forces in Germany) feel safe and respected and are willing to continue their handling at HAJ in the open.

The observation platform atop the 28-metre Viewing Hill provides views of Terminal 1-apron and activities on both runways.
However, action at Terimal 2 is can not be seen, as the terminal buildings block views. It is either 172 steps to the top or a graded footpath circling the hill. 
Be aware, that there is no real shelter from the elements on the hill. 
 
To reach this location from the Terminals, take S-Bahn for one station only.

Alongside each of the two runways there is a dedicated spotters hill complete with car park (no charges for car parking or access to the hill). These locations are too far away from the terminal in order to reach them on foot. Car or bike are recommended.
The one to the south at 48.340930, 11.795520 gives also (rather distant) views of Terminal 2 area and the sun will be behind you for action on runway 08R/26L. Be prepared for intersection departures of smaller aircraft on runway 26L.

Foot paths along the extensive street-system within the airport provides options for shooting aircraft on taxiways. However, at most times, aircraft will be positioned higher than the photographer. As usual, fences can obstruct views.

==Official Spotting Locations==

Finding places to view the movements at Arrecife is not difficult, on the eastern side of the runway towards the South end is the beach while both runway ends are easy to watch from open ground. About the only place you cannot view from is landside in the Terminal, once airside mind its great including a outside eating area!

==Other Spotting Locations==

The runway is laid out as 03-21, 03 being the South end by the beach with the approach over the sea and is the more common end apart from when the wind is calm or else it has a rare change of direction. Some planes will still use the 21 end if possible to take off to avoid the climb out on 03 over the mountains.
To Drive to the 03 end of the runway, follow the signs for Matagorda off the LZ-40 and then keep straight on over the round about, a dirt track goes off on the left after about 1/4 mile. take this and just stay left of the white building if in a car. If on foot either follow the driveway or else walk towards the sea and follow the promenade to the end of the runway which is behind the white house. None really, mind don't bother trying to access the cargo area, first you have to get through the Police check and then there are no views anyway!

==Regular Traffic==
A number of newspaper flights arrive after 0700 each morning bringing the papers/mail in. Most operated by EMB-120's and Metros.

Scheduled services are operated by:
*Aer Lingus with A320's
*Air Nostrum with CRJ's
*Binter with ATR 72's or 737's (Futura)
*FlyGlobeSpan with 737's
*GB Airways (BA) with A320/321's
*Iberia with A321's
*Air Europa with 737NG's mainly
*Spanair with A320, MD-80's and also B717's (Sat/sun)

Everything else is mainly charter traffic.

Plenty of places airside to eat/drink.
Number of eating places in Matagorda on the seafront where you can eat/drink
and see the planes on approach over the sea. Easy walk from the runway end.
A hire car is fairly cheap here and recommended for getting around.

There are no views from inside the terminal building landside. 
Once airside, there are windows in each of the four gate areas, but with limited views onto small parts of the apron. Some locations give views onto one of the runways, too, but none is good for photography as windows are tinted. 
 
===Parking garage===
For the spotter in a hurry, the top level of the car park opposite the terminal building can serve as a vantage point, but views are restricted to the southwestern ends of the runways and some longterm remote stands. 
 
===Around the airport===
There are a number of locations around the airport's perimeter, but to get there a car or a bike are recommended. 

#The end of Camino de Son Fangos at "39.548065, 2.707282" (coordinates for google maps) can be reached on foot from the nearby Carrefour supermarket, but views from there aren't too good. Do not get fooled by Google maps: The camino is interrupted by the airport perimeter in direction north and you cannot head directly to location #2 (even on foot) ! 
#West of runway 24R on Carrer Lluchmajor "39.554784,2.719846". Do not go there on foot, as when coming from the west, you will have to bypass Palma's "slum" at Son Banya (a place not recommended to be after nightfall). Growing bushes on the other side of the airport fence more and more are obstructing views. 
#Much better is a location further north that can be reached from the village of Son Ferriol "39.560280, 2.730200". This is a dead end with not more than 2 cars to park; keep the entrance to the farm clear ! Stay off the private properties including the fields itself. This location offers good views of runway 24R and western / northern apron. Traffic on runway 24L can be monitored, too, but not much more.
#Northeast of the airport: With runway 24L used for arrivals you can also park at location "39.559321, 2.769432" and have landing aircraft buzz right overhead you. The sun should be no problem for head-on shots. 
#With runway 06R used for departures, try to head for the park at Poligono Son Oms (walking distance from the Playa de Palma): "39.539926,2.735167". 

==Locations to Avoid==

After nightfall, stay away from the area of "Son Banya" to the west of the airfield (see Spotting location 2 above) or drive through quickly.

During busy summer season almost every carrier in Europe flies to PMI. 
Winter is considerably less busy with pax numbers falling to a 10th of summer peak numbers. 
 
The single biggest carrier in PMI is Air Berlin for whom PMI is a hub airport.

===Runway usage===
Only runways 06L/24R and 06R/24L are used regularly; runway 06C/24C only serves as a taxiway nowadays (therefore some sources list 2, others 3 runways, but the aerial view reveals that that strip of concrete is still maintained as a runway). 
 
Unless there is construction work going on or in case of emergency closure of runway 06L/24R, runway 24L is not used for departures and 06R is not used for landings. This is in order to shield the village of C'an Pastilla from excessive aircraft noise (even now it gets loud there). The only execption I have witnessed sofar were military flights by a CASA turbo-prop.
