MEX/MMMX is Mexico's largest and busiest airport and home base to Aeromexico, Interjet, and Aeromar, as well as the cargo airlines AeroUnion and MasAir. It also serves the Mexican national air force and federal police force. There are two runways, RWY 05L/23R and 05R/23L, with the most frequent configuration is in the 05 direction. Mexico City sits in a large valley at an altitude over 2200 meters (7200 feet). (The surrounding tall volcanos would make a spectacular backdrop if they weren't most of the time invisible behind the famous air pollution. There are a few percent of days of the year when these volcanoes are visible, most of these days being during late Fall and early Winter)

No official spotting locations exist at MEX. Security is generally friendly, but being able to hold simple conversations in Spanish goes a long way.

==Spotting Locations==

===Highway Overpass===

Although surrounded by chain-link fence and often swarming with touts, the best public spot for watching traffic is the pedestrian footbridge across the highway on the far west end of the field. It is at the end of RWY 05L and has good views down both runways as well as the Terminal 1 ramp.

From Terminal 1 arrivals/departures level, follow the signs all the way westward (left, if arriving) toward the Metro station, continuing out the doors past the taxi stand. At the Metro station itself, veer left until you're at the road and continue south fifty meters or so. You will see a long winding ramp up to a pedestrian crossing of the road. The top is covered in fence, but the end of the ramp has no fence and still has a good view.

WARNING Mexico City has become much safer over the last few years, but the neighborhoods around the airport are still notorious. Do not take anything unnecessary with you to this location and be conscious of crowds letting out of the Metro station, if for no other reason than to be accommodating to the local commuters. The bridge is very narrow and crowded on weekends, with few spotters during weekdays. Be prepared to continuously fend off chicle salesman and other touts, and bored locals looking for friendly conversation. (There's a 24h left luggage/locker service in Terminal 1 (ground-side) for the rest of your stuff.) Also beware that this location is completely exposed. At MEX's low latitude, the sun gets very intense year round, and the high altitude means a dramatically higher UV dose. Wear a hat and long sleeves and a strong sunscreen. Thunderstorms develop (and dissipate) rapidly in the afternoon during the summer, and it's probably best to avoid the freeway ramp when the lightening starts.

===Terminal 1===

Air-side at Terminal 1, quite good, if partial, views of the runways can be had at the west end, beyond puerta 20. (East of that, the international arrivals vestibule blocks any view.) These gates are often empty and no one seems to mind if you stand at the windows and take photos.

===Hotel Camino Real===

Camino Real is located across a footbridge from Terminal 1, and are very accommodating to requests for rooms with runway views. In particular, ask for a room as high and westward in the south tower as you can get. Room 6127 is known to be good. Beware that the windows are probably always dirty and do not open, so this is probably best for numbers-takers (and Mode-S/ADS-B receivers), but reasonable photos can still be had with enough effort.

===Parking Garage===

The parking garage in front of Hotel Camino Real offers similar views, but look inconspicuous when the security patrols come around. They wear bright yellow vests, so you'll see them coming. As usual, be friendly and they'll likely go away.

==Locations to Avoid==

Unless you're with a local, don't try to navigate the neighborhood around the airfield.

==Regular Traffic==

By far, most of the traffic at MEX is Aeromexico, Aeromexico Connect, and Interjet. Aeromar, VivaAerobus, Copa, Taca/Lacsa (incl Taca Peru), and Volaris are also frequent. British Airways, Air France, Lufthansa, and KLM have daily 747-400 service, LAN twice-daily 767 service, and Iberia twice-daily A340 service, all arriving between 1700 and 2000. Air Canada, United/Continental, and American Airlines fly several flights a day.

Also watch out for Mexican air force ("fuerza aerea") C-130's, 727's, and 737's, Mexican Navy ("marina") C-295's, and the distinctive all-black CN-235's operated by the Policía Federal.

==Facilities and Transportation==

The airport is about MX$120 by taxi from the central district. You can get to/from the airport via the Metro but it's at least two transfers and several questionable stations away from anywhere you're likely to be staying or want to go.

Another way is to ride Metrobús (Mexico City's Bus Rapid Transit System) Line 4 headed to the Airport, it's a easily-recognizable red bus that says "Centro Histórico - Downtown" on its side. It stops just two blocks from the Zócalo (Main Square) to the north, and also in the northeast corner of the "Alameda Central" Park, just behind Bellas Artes (Fine Arts) Palace. It costs MX$30 and it's really safe. Just be careful, in the points listed above, there pass two different services of Metrobús, one takes you up to San Lázaro (Bus & Metro Station) for MX$6 and the other one is the service to Airport's Terminals (It reaches T1 first, and then it go on T2). You will recognize this last one because it's almost empty and it has the number $30.00 (it's fare) on the lower left corner of its windshield.

Note that you cannot ride the Aerotrain between terminals unless you're carrying a boarding pass for a relevant airline (you must also go through a basic security check).

In addition to Hotel Camino Real, there is also a Hilton within Terminal 1 and an NH hotel in Terminal 2. Not clear if they offer rooms with views of the airfield.

==Official Spotting Locations==

===Aircraft Observation Area===
Gravel parking lot located off of Hamilton Rd. at the Southeast corner of the airport, directly south of the end of runway 28L.

==Other Spotting Locations==

===Parking Garage===
The North end of the garage provides good views of arrivals and departures on 28R, as well as the Concourse C ramp. South end provides a good view of the midpoint of runway 28L/10R, which can be good for rotation pictures or shots of planes rolling out on landing.

Level 6 of the main garage also can be good for spotting, but is not as close to the runway.

===94th Aero Squadron Restaurant===
The 94th Aero Squadron is just East of the airport fire station. It is good for close-ups of aircraft waiting to depart, although a fence separates the restaurant's patio from the airport perimeter road.

The island of Sylt is the most prestigious island in Germany's part of the North Sea and has a lot of private houses used for vacations. As the island is not linked to the mainland by a bridge or a ferry, all cars go onto a train via a causeway. The island is located at the northernmost end of Germany, meaning that it is quite some distance to drive from many populous areas in Germany. This fact enabled low cost carriers like Air Berlin and TUIfly to explore and exploit the market in recent years, as it brings down travel times considerably.

==Official Spotting Locations==

==Other Spotting Locations==
From the tiny terminal walk a few steps along the airport fence.

==Locations to Avoid==
none

==Regular Traffic==
Traffic mainly caters for leisure purposes, i.e. people visiting the island for vacation; traffic figures and destinations vary per season, but destinations mainly are limited to the more populous areas in Germany and the airlines` hubs.
Do not get fooled by the many destinations shown on the airports website ! Most of these destinations will require a connection at some hub !

Traffic in peak season has B737/A319 as the largest aircraft (from AB and X3), while Lufthansa flies their regional jets to GWT. AB-affiliate LGW flew their Dornier D228 to GWT during summer 2008. Some even smaller props are employed to fly the local equivilent to "Essential Air Service" mainly to Hamburg and/or Uetersen.

==Facilities and Transportation==
*The terminal is tiny; it gets crowded if a B737/A319 departs or arrives.
*The airport can be reached on foot from downtown Westerland in about 30-40 minutes.
*Details of bus services can be found on the [http://www.flughafen-sylt.de airport's website.]

===Aeroparque===

'''Location:''' Next to taxiway S, inside the airport grounds.

'''Availability:''' 10AM to 6PM, closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

'''Equipment:''' Optimal range is between 35-200mm. Having more on the upper end could help.

'''Security:''' None! The spot is made precisely to keep you off the other locations.

'''Watch out for:''' Harsh lighting due to direction of the runway, and strong heat distortion.

'''Description:''' Aeroparque is an excellent location to begin. It sits right along taxiway S, the main taxiway that runs parallel to runway 8. However, it provides extremely limited visibility for runway 10 arrivals, and none for the departures.

The closeness is very good for those spotters that use flexible mid-range telephotos, but will severely handicap those that have high-end telephotos (especially those with lower ends higher than 70mm). On a 1.6x DSLR, 70mm will barely fit a 757 on taxiway S. Due to the direction of the runway, the lighting is extremely harsh, and spotters should take extra precautions about configuring their cameras properly for the harsh light.

Admission is free most days of the week. It's worth noting however, that on Sundays, a security guard sits in the parking lot handing out tickets for admission. When given one, you either have to buy at least $6 worth of food and drink while at the Aeroparque & give the stamped ticket to the guard upon exit, or pay a $6 fee upon leaving. Still, the charge is worth it for the quality of pictures possible from the Aeroparque.
==Other Spotting Locations==

===Playa de Pinones (Pinones Beach)===
Playa de Pinones or Pinones Beach is an excellent location, since goers can enjoy the beach and get in the water, but most importantly, this beach is within inches of the airport, so spotters can enjoy watching airplanes take off while bathing. There is also a small security gate right in front of Pinones beach. Spotters can go and look at airplanes there for a few minutes, a few feet away from the actual runway, basically leaving the spotters face to face with the aircraft. But do not stay longer than a couple of minutes at this spot if you do not want to attract security.

===Isla Verde and El Condado===
Some of the hotels in nearby Isla Verde and in El Condado also provide excellent spotting locations from their room balconies.

==Locations to Avoid==

===Central Parking Lot===

The airport's parking lot (multi-level) used to be an excellent spot until the construction of the new terminals began. Now the visibility of aircraft taxiing along H taxiway is highly limited due to the construction, and when runway 10 re-opens, the spot will be pretty much useless except for catching new angles of runway 08 departures. However, this will require large amounts of zoom (upwards of 300mm), and even then heat distortion might ruin anything that could come out of it.

Another consideration is that airport security patrols the parking lot occasionally, so being cautious is essential. Security tends to be a problem if the police downstairs notices too much activity going on in the top level. Aeroparque is a better spot when runway 10 is closed, and Laguna Garden is a viable alternative when it open.
A small selection of Gemini and Dragon Wings models are also available for purchase there.
The airport is on Metrobus routes B40 and C45. While no buses stop at the Aeroparque, you can take the bus to the main terminal. From there, the Aeroparque is a reasonably short walk.

The Aeroparque has a snack bar on the lower level. Products available include chips, ice cream, soft drinks, beer, and some fast food items, such as Buffalo Wings, chicken strips, hot dogs, and french fries. A small selection of Gemini and Dragon Wings models are also available for purchase there.

The airport is on Metrobus routes B40 and C45. While no buses stop at the Aeroparque, you can take the bus to the main terminal. From there, the Aeroparque is a reasonably short walk.

==Official Spotting Locations==

===Aeroparque===

==Other Spotting Locations==

===Playa de Pinones (Pinones Beach)===
But do not stay longer than that if you do not want to attract security.

==Isla Verde and El Condado==
Some of the hotels in nearby Isla Verde and in El Condado also provide excellent spotting locations from their room balconies.

==Locations to Avoid==

===Central Parking Lot===

Phoenix Sky Harbor is located east of downtown Phoenix just north of Interstate 10. The airport has a single access roadway, "Sky Harbor Boulevard", that runs east-west through the central terminal area. The airport has three parallel runways: 8-26 on the north side (north complex), and 7L-25R/7R-25L on the south side (south complex). Generally photography and spotting are welcomed at the airport and the local authorities are friendly to visitors.

==Official Spotting Locations==

===Terminal 4 Garage===

The Terminal 4 rooftop garage can offer good views of the east end of the airport, including both runways. Levels 7 and 8 are preferred for photography. The north side faces the US Airways hub operation as well as runway 8/26. Afternoon landing shots can be taken with a 300-500mm lens. The south side faces the Southwest hub operation. Photography of either ramp is variable depending on the sun (the US Airways side is best photographed in winter, Southwest on summer evenings). During the summer, before sunset, photography is possible of aircraft queuing up to depart runway 25L (south runway); again, a 300mm lens is needed.

===Terminal 3 Garage===

This garage offers views of both runways as well as the midfield taxiway crossovers (Taxiways Sierra and Tango). Level 4 is preferred, as Level 5 is enclosed by a wire fence and Level 6 is the top and exposed to the sun. The east end of the garage faces the crossover taxiways, and photography is best in the afternoon. A new control tower is being constructed (opening 2007) which has obstructed some of the view. The corners of the parking garage are best for photography, however, beware of shadows falling across aircraft from the control tower and antenna. Since most departing traffic uses the south runway, a good mix of traffic will use the crossover. Both north and south gate areas of Terminal 3 can be photographed from the garage as well.

===Terminal 2 Garage===

The 2-story parking garage at Terminal 2 is a great location to photograph/spot aircraft on the north runway. Aircraft taxiing on the parallel taxiway are within 50-150mm lens range. Winter sun is good for this location. Go to the top of the parking garage and photograph over the roadway and fenceline (you need to find a gap in the light poles - yes there are some!!). The old mound near the fenceline corner, closer to the taxiway, is still there, but a new tall chain link fence was constructed during 2004 which prevents photography over the fence.

==Other Spotting Locations==

These spots all require a car to access.

===Old Tower Road===

Head west and exit the airport on 24th Street. Turn left (south) on 24th Street and turn left on Old Tower Road. Park in the dirt lot next to the street (you must drive over a curb to do this - the street is posted no parking) or at the Best Western south of I-10 and walk back. This spot is good for landing shots on 7R in morning hours, all year.

===Cutter Aviation===

Continue east on Old Tower Road. Cutter Aviation has an observation deck, located under the old ATC tower. The deck may or may not be open - contact Cutter before spotting or photography. Landing shots can be taken of runway 7R, but need a 300-500mm lens. Cutter does not allow photography of aircraft on their ramp.

===South Cargo===

Continue east of Cutter on Old Tower Road. Before reaching the Air National Guard base, views of aircraft parked on the South Cargo ramp can be seen through the fence. Ramp clutter may be an issue for photography.

===Left Seat Restaurant===

Located on Air Lane between 24th Street and 32nd Street, north of the airport. Open weekdays for breakfast and lunch (0600-1400 M-F), the Left Seat restaurant offers good views of traffic on runway 8/26. A rooftop spotting deck is open during business hours, although it faces south and into the sun.

===Air Lane===

On Air Lane, between 40th Street and State Highway 153, there is a asphalt parking lot with a small tree. This spot offers views of the north runway, although it faces south and into the sun much of the year. Photographs of landings on Runway 26 are possible on summer evenings when the sunset is to the northwest. This spot offers no shade and no facilities, but it is preferred by the local police as a place to spot.

===East Economy Lot area===

A new parking garage is located in the airport's east economy parking lot. This garage may offer good opportunities to photograph landing aircraft on the south runways during summer evenings.

===40th Street/Salt River Bank===

Leave the airport via the east exit, and head south on State Highway 153. Turn right on University Ave, where the freeway ends, and right on 40th Street. Take 40th Street north until it ends. Park at the end of the road, or drive up the dirt embankment. On top of the dirt embankment, the threshold of runways 25L and 25R can be seen to the north, and landing shots taken for aircraft landing 25L/R in winter sunlight. Departing aircraft from 7L may also be photographed with a 300mm lens in the morning.

==Locations to Avoid==

The dirt hill north of the Terminal 2 garage, next to the fenceline, is no longer usable due to a new fence built in 2004.

Avoid all employee parking lots as they are secured by card access and are guarded. This includes the East Employee parking lot.

==Regular Traffic==

Landings normally use the North (8/26) and South (7R/25L) runways. Departures normally use the center (7L/25R) runway. The airport normally operates east during the morning (landing 7R and 8, departing 7L) and west from mid-morning through the evening (landing 25L and 26, departing 25R).

Alaska Airlines (Boeing 737-800, 737-900), British Airways (Boeing 747), Delta Airlines (Boeing 737), Fed Ex (MD-10), Southwest Airlines (Boeing 737), Spirit Airlines (Airbus A320), UPS (Airbus A300, MD-10) and WestJet (Boeing 737) are among the most commonly seen airlines at the airport, apart from American Airlines (which has a hub at this airport) types.

In the past the airport was a well know place where to find several international airliners at the maintenance hangar and Alitalia MD-11, Korean Air MD-11 and Saudia L-1011 are among airplanes known to be spotted there. This is no longer the case since Southwest Airlines bought the maintenance area and does not accept any other airlines' aircraft to be repaired there. However, a former Aerolineas Argentinas Airbus A340 and another Airbus A340, in the colors of Qatar Airways (carrying the Qatari Emir and/or his family) have been spotted there frequently.

==Facilities and Transportation==
All terminals and remote parking lots are connected by shuttle busses.

Valley Metro runs two bus lines through Sky Harbor. The Red Line goes west to downtown and east to Downtown Tempe, where numerous bars, restaurants, and US Airways headquarters are located (including the US Airways company store). There is also a free bus that provides service between the Metro Light Rail stop at 44th Street and Washington and the airport terminals.

===Terminal 4 Garage===

===Terminal 3 Garage===

===Terminal 2 Garage===

==Other Spotting Locations==

These spots all require a car to access.

===Old Tower Road===

===Cutter Aviation===

===South Cargo===

Continue east of Cutter on Old Tower Road. Before reaching the Air National Guard base, views of aircraft parked on the South Cargo ramp can be seen through the fence. Ramp clutter may be an issue for photography.

===Left Seat Restaurant===

===Air Lane===

===East Economy Lot area===

A new parking garage is located in the airport's east economy parking lot. This garage may offer good opportunities to photograph landing aircraft on the south runways during summer evenings.

===40th Street/Salt River Bank===

==Locations to Avoid==

The dirt hill north of the Terminal 2 garage, next to the fenceline, is no longer usable due to a new fence built in 2004.

Avoid all employee parking lots as they are secured by card access and are guarded. This includes the East Employee parking lot.

==Regular Traffic==

Landings normally use the North (8/26) and South (7R/25L) runways. Departures normally use the center (7L/25R) runway. The airport normally operates east during the morning (landing 7R and 8, departing 7L) and west from mid-morning through the evening (landing 25L and 26, departing 25R).

Alaska Airlines (Boeing 737-800, 737-900), British Airways (Boeing 747), Delta Airlines (Boeing 737), Fed Ex (MD-10), Southwest Airlines (Boeing 737), Spirit Airlines (Airbus A320) and WestJet (Boeing 737) are among the most commonly seen airline sat the airport, apart from American Airlines (which has a hub at this airport) types.

==Facilities and Transportation==

Located 20 miles west of [[PHX]] on Interstate 10. Exit at Litchfield Road and turn left. Drive south on Litchfield Road approximately 1.5 miles and the airport entrance will be on your right.

==Official Spotting Locations==

===General Aviation Terminal & Ramp===

Starting at the airport entrance, drive west. The large hangars on the left are owned by TIMCO and carry out airliner maintenance & scrapping. They are also in charge of the airplane storage. In the past, they were typically unfriendly towards spotters and did not allow any access or photography. There is a small guard shack between the two hangars that you should probably avoid. By staying inside your car, and slowly driving to the west, you will be able to see & read off the aircraft present near the hangars.

At the end of this street is the small but modern Goodyear terminal. Any transient bizjets will be parked here. A request inside to walk to the control tower (which is located south & beyond the TIMCO hangars) may yield in permission granted, you will be asked to not enter the TIMCO property and to remain close to the pavement edge.

From the terminal parking lot, a good view can be seen of the stored aircraft across the runway. Given an early morning with little heat haze, a number of these aircraft can be read off from here.

To the right of the terminal, and north of the TIMCO area, is the Lufthansa pilot training academy. Their light aircraft are very active during the whole week, since they started to fly Monday-Sunday in January 2007 for better utilized capacity due to the extremely increased need for pilots.

==Other Spotting Locations==

===South Side of Airfield - View of TIMCO Main Ramp===

Turning around and exiting the airport back on Litchfield Road, turn right. Cross the railroad tracks and turn right again. Drive west on this highway. A view of the TIMCO ramp area can be seen on your right, a quick stop on the roadway edge can yield some numbers. Continuing west along this highway, more stored aircraft on the western perimeter can be read off. There are a few rural dirt roads on the right that lead northerly to the perimeter, near where the stored aircraft are parked. These are worth exploring as they bring you right up to the perimeter fence. A blast shield is located at the engine runup area, and photographs of aircraft on this ramp can be taken from the south perimeter fence. After completing this, turn around and drive back to the airport entrance on Litchfield Road.

===West Side of Airfield - Desert Storage Area===

To the north of the airport, intersecting Litchfield Road, is Western Avenue. Driving along Western Avenue to the west, a view can be seen of Goodyear's ramp area, the northern threshold of the runway, and finally the stored aircraft on the western perimeter. Turn left on the first street after the stored aircraft. This unused street (Bullard Avenue) roughly parallels the stored aircraft to the west, and eventually dead-ends. You can park your car and venture on foot to the perimeter fence to read off more aircraft, even taking a photograph or two of the stored aircraft (mostly record shots). Security/police from inside have been known to question you if they see you (as you are in a very remote area) but usually they are kind to our hobby and let you continue, especially if you keep your distance from the fenceline.

==Locations to Avoid==

Avoid close contact with the TIMCO offices and guard shacks. Do not enter TIMCO's property.

==Regular Traffic==

No regular traffic serves Goodyear, but airliner maintenance and storage provide random movements of up to five per day. The runway is 3-21, and landing traffic can be photographed from either end.

During 2016, there were aircraft of various airlines at the airport, including SF Airlines (Boeing 757), Aerolineas Argentinas (Airbus A340), Iberia (Airbus A340), Virgin Atlantic (Boeing 747), Air New Zealand (Boeing 747), Shanghai Airlines (Airbus A320), Caribbean Airlines (Boeing 737), Boliviana de Aviacion (Boeing 737) and many others.

==Facilities and Transportation==

A car is required to visit Goodyear. The small general aviation terminal provides basic facilities.

==Official Spotting Locations==

===Aeroparque===

==Other Spotting Locations==

===Location===
Spotters can go and look at airplanes there for a few minutes. But do not stay longer than that if you do not want to attract security.

Some of the hotels in nearby Isla Verde also provide excellent spotting locations from their room balconies.

==Locations to Avoid==

===Central Parking Lot===

==Regular Traffic==

Allegiant Airlines is scheduled to begin service from Orlando/Sanford on December 14th, and will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Allegiant Airlines will also begin service from Cincinnati and Pittsburg on December 17th, and will operate once per week on Saturdays.
