Official Spotting Locations
Terminal Observation Lounge
There is a very nice observation lounge in the terminal, located above the food court. Stairs are located on either side of the food court. However, it is past the security checkpoint so it is accessible only if you are traveling. There are several comfortable chairs, couches, and tables, and there are very nice floor to ceiling windows that provide a view of the ramp and runways.

Albuquerque Airport Viewing Area (Spirit Drive)
A gravel lot near the threshold of runway 03. This runway is used less than 08/26 so movements here can be slow. However, when winds cause traffic to reverse, many departures will use runway 21 to avoid the longer taxi to runway 26, though heavier aircraft will still use the longer runway 26. Because of the distance from the runway and the fence, photographing arrivals is difficult and few departures use this runway. The cargo facilities are close and offer a few opportunities for photos. All movements on this runway can be logged however. Arrivals on runway 08 are in view from this parking lot but are too far away for good photos.
As of January 2022, the official spotting lot has been closed off to the public. However, there is a similar dirt lot adjacent to the original one which provides largely the same viewing opportunities.

Girard Boulevard
A small pull-off at the South end of this cul-de-sac.
Most movements on 08/26 (the main runway) can be logged. This won't be a good place to spot arrivals on 08, but you may be able to get pictures of departures on that runway from quite a distance. If you do not want to go through security to get to the Spotting Lounge, this is probably the best place for 08 departures.
Some arrivals on 03 may be missed.
The parking lot is best for spotting aircraft taxiing in and out of Concourse A (mostly Southwest and United Express) and Concourse C (small commercial airlines like Boutique Air and Advanced Air).
Keep in mind that although this was a great place to spot arrivals/departures on runway 17 previously, the runway is closed now.

Other Spotting Locations
FBO Parking Lot (Clark Car Rd)
The FBO parking lot is not a great place to spot runway action, but it provides opportunities to see taxiing and parked general aviation aircraft. It is okay to spot here for the most part, but be advised that you may be asked to leave if you stay for long periods of time.

Eclipse Aerospace Lot
Located along Clark Car Rd just north of the FBO lot, this location provides views of RWY 08 arrivals and departures. The dirt lot directly to the north of the Eclipse Aerospace building and parking lot is the best place to spot 08 action. If there are spots open in the Eclipse parking lot, this should be a generally OK place to spot without getting asked to leave.

University Blvd
As you drive down University towards the Spirit Drive location mentioned above, directly across from Access Rd B, there is a rather large dirt lot right on the threshold of runway 08. It is impossible to see departures on runway 08 from here, but arrivals onto runway 08 come in directly over your head at about 300 feet. This isn't an official spotting location, but it is one of the better places to see arrivals onto RWY 08.

MTB/ATV Hill
If you continue south down University past Spirit Drive, you will see a large rattlesnake in the median. Just past this on your right is a hill with trails lining it. This may seem appealing because it falls directly underneath the approach path for 03 arrivals and is quite close to the runway threshold. This hill and the trails that line it are part of a public MTB and ATV park. Not recommended because there is no place to pull off, no parking lot, and you'll probably get better views from the Albuquerque Airport Viewing Area. If you want to take pictures from here, you should park at the viewing area and walk here (about a 25-30 minute walk), but keep in mind it is not an official spotting area, and you may get asked to leave.

Locations to Avoid
FAA Facility
On your way to Spirit Drive (above), you will see a Boeing 727-200(Adv)(F) and smaller GA aircraft parked by the FAA hangar. There is an employee parking lot which gives excellent views of the 08 approach.
Resist the temptation to use it, you will quickly be told to leave or possibly worse.

Kirtland AFB
Time was you could park on the access road with impunity. Since 2001, this is now a totally secure area.
Regular Traffic
Southwest Airlines is a dominant carrier at the airport. Traffic on the weekends is noticeably less than during the week.

Airlines such as Allegiant and Frontier do not fly to the Sunport every day of the week, and some airlines only do one flight daily into the Sunport, such as JetBlue (doing so around midnight).

Cargo
The Sunport sees regular cargo services from FedEx and UPS. UPS typically utilizes the Airbus A300-600R (F), Boeing 767-300ERF, and Boeing 757-200PF. FedEx and UPS send A300s to Albuquerque periodically, though the Boeing 757/767 are more common. FedEX additionally operates Cessna 208B Super Cargomaster aircraft throughout New Mexico, with the flights originating primarily in Albuquerque. These flights are operated by Empire Airlines. As a rare treat, the DC-10 has been known to make an appearance from FedEx (although 10 Tanker Air Carrier can also been seen there frequently). As of January 2022, Amazon's Prime Air has expanded operations out of the Sunport, with service from their ATR 72 freighters, operated by Silver Airways. Amazon's airline has plans to expand more out of Albuquerque in the future, including a new cargo building.

Firefighting airline 10 Tanker Air Carrier stores their fleet of four DC-10-30 aircraft on the cargo ramp, near the dedicated Spotting Area on University

Scheduled Cargo
*FedEx Express: Boeing 767-300ERF, Airbus A300F4-600R (F)
**FedEx Feeder (Empire Airlines): Cessna 208B Super Cargomaster
*UPS: Boeing 767-300ERF, Boeing 757-200PF, Airbus A300-600R (F)
*Prime Air (Silver Airways): ATR 72-500 (F)

General Aviation
Even with Double Eagle as the city's general aviation reliever airport, the Sunport sees its fair share of general aviation traffic. Aircraft ranging from Skyhawks to Boeing Business Jets have been known to stop by for a visit. The Sunport is also home to Eclipse Aviation, makers of the Eclipse 500 very light jet.

Some of the most common General Aviation sights come from Preston Richard R. Trustee aircraft, Bode Aviation aircraft, CSI 135 Division aircraft, and others, including various air ambulances.

Military/Government
With Kirtland Air Force Base occupying much of the western portion of the airfield, you are guaranteed to spot some type of military aircraft. The most dominant of these being helicopters. Spotting these may be difficult, as they depart from the base itself and fly south to the "Aux Field" and controlled firing areas. The base also plays host to the New Mexico Air National Guard equipped with F-16Cs. The 58th Special Operations Wing operates from Kirtland as well, affording the opportunity to see aircraft including Lockheed C-130s, Boeing MV-22 Ospreys, and Boeing C-17 Globemasters on a regular basis. Other aircraft seen can include the Boeing E-6 Mercury, and Boeing KC-135R.

The US Department of Energy maintains a ramp on the Kirtland portion of the field. Although flights are infrequent, they do afford an opportunity to spot "baby" DC-9s and deHavilland Twin Otters.

In addition to base traffic, transient military traffic is a regular occurrence at the Sunport. Anything is possible, from T-6A Texan IIs to F/A-18 Hornets.

National Nuclear Safety Administration Boeing 737-400(C) aircraft are also a common sight at the Sunport, and they also have a DC-9-30 on the ramp near the GA area that is currently not operating.

Cargo
The Sunport sees regular cargo services from FedEx and UPS. UPS typically utilizes the Airbus A300-600R (F), Boeing 767-300ERF, and Boeing 757-200PF. FedEx from time to time sends its A300-600R (F) to Albuquerque, though the Boeing 757/767 are more common. They also operate Cessna 208B Super Cargomaster aircraft throughout New Mexico, with the flights originating in Albuquerque. These flights are operated by Empire Airlines. As a rare treat, the DC-10 has been known to make an appearance, from usually 10 Tanker Air Carrier, FedEx, or UPS.

Firefighting airline 10 Tanker Air Carrier stores their fleet of four aircraft on the cargo ramp, near the dedicated Spotting Area on University

Scheduled Cargo
*FedEx Express: Boeing 767-300ERF, Airbus A300F4-600R (F)
**FedEx Feeder (Empire Airlines): Cessna 208B Super Cargomaster
*UPS: Boeing 767-300ERF, Boeing 757-200PF, Airbus A300-600R (F)

National Nuclear Safety Administration Boeing 737-400(C) aircraft are also a common sight at the Sunport, and they also have a DC-9-30 on the ramp near the GA area

<!-- Introductory paragraph goes here -->

Phoenix Sky Harbor is located east of downtown Phoenix just north of Interstate 10. The airport has a single access roadway, "Sky Harbor Boulevard", that runs east-west through the central terminal area. The airport has three parallel runways: 8-26 on the north side (north complex), and 7L-25R/7R-25L on the south side (south complex). Generally photography and spotting are welcomed at the airport and the local authorities are friendly to visitors.

Official Spotting Locations
Terminal 4 Garage
The Terminal 4 rooftop garage can offer good views of the east end of the airport, including both runways. Levels 7 and 8 are preferred for photography. The north side faces the American Airlines hub operation as well as runway 8/26. Afternoon landing shots can be taken with a 300-500mm lens. The south side faces the Southwest hub operation. Photography of either ramp is variable depending on the sun (the American side is best photographed in winter, Southwest on summer evenings). During the summer, before sunset, photography is possible of aircraft queuing up to depart runway 25L (south runway); again, a 300mm lens is needed.

Terminal 3 Garage
This garage offers views of both runways as well as the midfield taxiway crossovers (Taxiways Sierra and Tango). Level 4 is preferred, as Level 5 is enclosed by a wire fence and Level 6 is the top and exposed to the sun. The east end of the garage faces the crossover taxiways, and photography is best in the afternoon. A control tower obstructs some of the view. The corners of the parking garage are best for photography, however, beware of shadows falling across aircraft from the control tower and antenna. Since most departing traffic uses the south runway, a good mix of traffic will use the crossover. Both north and south gate areas of Terminal 3 can be photographed from the garage as well.

Terminal 2 Garage
The 2-story parking garage at Terminal 2 is a great location to photograph/spot aircraft on the north runway. Aircraft taxiing on the parallel taxiway are within 50-150mm lens range. Winter sun is good for this location. Go to the top of the parking garage and photograph over the roadway and fenceline (you need to find a gap in the light poles - yes there are some!!). The old mound near the fenceline corner, closer to the taxiway, is still there, but a new tall chain link fence was constructed during 2004 which prevents photography over the fence.

Other Spotting Locations
These spots all require a car to access.

Old Tower Road
Head west and exit the airport on 24th Street. Turn left (south) on 24th Street and turn left on Old Tower Road. Park in the dirt lot next to the street (you must drive over a curb to do this - the street is posted no parking) or at the Best Western south of I-10 and walk back. This spot is good for landing shots on 7R in morning hours, all year.

Cutter Aviation
Continue east on Old Tower Road. Cutter Aviation has an observation deck, located under the old ATC tower. The deck may or may not be open - contact Cutter before spotting or photography. Landing shots can be taken of runway 7R, but need a 300-500mm lens. Cutter does not allow photography of aircraft on their ramp.

South Cargo
Continue east of Cutter on Old Tower Road. Before reaching the Air National Guard base, views of aircraft parked on the South Cargo ramp can be seen through the fence. Ramp clutter may be an issue for photography.

Left Seat Restaurant
Located on Air Lane between 24th Street and 32nd Street, north of the airport. Open weekdays for breakfast and lunch (0600-1400 M-F), the Left Seat restaurant offers good views of traffic on runway 8/26. A rooftop spotting deck is open during business hours, although it faces south and into the sun.

Air Lane
On Air Lane, between 40th Street and State Highway 153, there is a asphalt parking lot with a small tree. This spot offers views of the north runway, although it faces south and into the sun much of the year. Photographs of landings on Runway 26 are possible on summer evenings when the sunset is to the northwest. This spot offers no shade and no facilities, but it is preferred by the local police as a place to spot.

East Economy Lot area
A parking garage is located in the airport's east economy parking lot. This garage may offer good opportunities to photograph landing aircraft on the south runways during summer evenings.

40th Street/Salt River Bank
Leave the airport via the east exit, and head south on State Highway 153. Turn right on University Ave, where the freeway ends, and right on 40th Street. Take 40th Street north until it ends. Park at the end of the road, or drive up the dirt embankment. On top of the dirt embankment, the threshold of runways 25L and 25R can be seen to the north, and landing shots taken for aircraft landing 25L/R in winter sunlight. Departing aircraft from 7L may also be photographed with a 300mm lens in the morning.

Locations to Avoid
The dirt hill north of the Terminal 2 garage, next to the fenceline, is no longer usable due to a fence built in 2004.

Avoid all employee parking lots as they are secured by card access and are guarded. This includes the East Employee parking lot.

Regular Traffic
Landings normally use the North (8/26) and South (7R/25L) runways. Departures normally use the center (7L/25R) runway. The airport normally operates east during the morning (landing 7R and 8, departing 7L) and west from mid-morning through the evening (landing 25L and 26, departing 25R).

Alaska Airlines (Boeing 737-800, 737-900, and possibly 737-700s), British Airways (Boeing 787), Delta Airlines (Boeing 737-800, Boeing 737-900ER, Boeing 767-300ER, Boeing 767-400ER, Airbus A321-200, Airbus A330-900neo), Delta Connection (E175-200LR), Fed Ex (Boeing 777F, McDonnell-Douglas MD-10/DC-10), Southwest Airlines (Boeing 737-700, Boeing 737-800, Boeing 737 MAX 8), Spirit Airlines (Airbus A320-200), UPS (Airbus A300F4-600R (F), Boeing 767-300ERF) and WestJet (Boeing 737-600, Boeing 737-700, Boeing 737-800) are among the most commonly seen airlines at the airport, apart from American Airlines (which has a hub at this airport) types, which include the Boeing 737-800, Boeing 737 MAX 8, Boeing 787-8, Boeing 787-9, Airbus A319-100, Airbus A320-200, Airbus A321-200, Airbus A321-200NX, and regional planes from American Eagle such as the Bombardier CRJ-700/701, Bombardier CRJ-900, and Embraer E175-200LR.

In the past the airport was a well known place where to find several international airliners at the maintenance hangar and Alitalia MD-11, Korean Air MD-11 and Saudia L-1011 are among airplanes known to be spotted there. This is no longer the case since Southwest Airlines bought the maintenance area and does not accept any other airlines' aircraft to be repaired there. However, a former Aerolineas Argentinas Airbus A340 and another Airbus A340, in the colors of Qatar Airways (carrying the Qatari Emir and/or his family) have been spotted there frequently. Condor 767-300ER aircraft can be seen on rare occasions.

Facilities and Transportation
All terminals and remote parking lots are connected by shuttle busses.

Valley Metro runs two bus lines through Sky Harbor. The Red Line goes west to downtown and east to Downtown Tempe, where numerous bars and restaurants are located. There is also a free bus that provides service between the Metro Light Rail stop at 44th Street and Washington and the airport terminals.

Not recommended for long-term viewing (you will likely be told to leave), but OK for a quick shot or two.

This isn't an official spotting location, but it is probably the best spot to see arrivals onto runway 08 excluding the spotting lounge inside security.

Scheduled Passenger
Southwest Airlines is a dominant carrier at the airport. Traffic on the weekends is noticeably less than during the week.

Airlines such as Allegiant and Frontier do not fly to the Sunport every day of the week, and some airlines only do one flight daily into the Sunport, such as JetBlue.
With Kirtland Air Force Base occupying much of the western portion of the airfield, you are guaranteed to spot some type of military aircraft. The most dominant of these being helicopters. The base also plays host to the New Mexico Air National Guard equipped with F-16Cs. The 58th Special Operations Wing operates from Kirtland as well, affording the opportunity to see aircraft including Lockheed MC-130s, Boeing MV-22 Ospreys, and Boeing C-17 Globemasters on a regular basis. Other aircraft seen can include the Boeing E-6 Mercury, and Boeing KC-135R.
In addition to base traffic, transient military traffic is a regular occurrence at the Sunport. Anything is possible, from T-6A Texan IIs to F/A-18 Hornets.

Southwest Airlines is a dominant carrier at the airport. Traffic on the weekends is noticeably less than during the week.

Airlines such as Allegiant and Frontier do not fly to the Sunport every day of the week, and some airlines only do one flight daily into the Sunport, such as Alaska and JetBlue.

Firefighting Airline 10 Tanker Air Carrier stores their Douglas DC-10-30(T) aircraft on the cargo ramp, near the dedicated Spotting Area on University

Scheduled Cargo
*FedEx Express: Boeing 767-300ERF, Boeing 757-200PF, Airbus A300F4-600

General Aviation
Even with Double Eagle as the city's general aviation reliever airport, the Sunport sees its far share of general aviation traffic. Aircraft ranging from Skyhawks to Boeing Business Jets have been known to stop by for a visit. The Sunport is also home to Eclipse Aviation, makers of the Eclipse 500 very light jet.

Some of the most common General Aviation sights come from Preston Richard R. Trustee aircraft, Bode Aviation aircraft, and others.

National Nuclear Safety Administration Boeing 737-400(C) aircraft are also a common sight at the Sunport.

Spirit Drive (Albuquerque Airport Viewing Area)
A gravel lot near the threshold of runway 03. This runway is used less than 08/26 so movements here can be slow. However, when winds cause traffic to reverse, many departures will use runway 21 to avoid the longer taxi to runway 26, though heavier aircraft will still use the longer runway 26. Because of the distance from the runway and the fence, photographing arrivals is difficult and few departures use this runway. The cargo facilities are close and offer a few opportunities for photos. All movements on this runway can be logged however.

Girard Boulevard
A small pull-off at the South end of this cul-de-sac.
Most movements on 08/26 (the main runway) can be logged but are too distant for photography. This won't be a good place to spot arrivals on 08, but you may be able to get pictures of departures on that runway. If you do not want to go through security to get to the Spotting Lounge, this is probably the best place for 08 departures.
Some arrivals on 03 may be missed.
The parking lot is best for spotting aircraft taxiing in and out of Terminal A (mostly Southwest and United Express) and Terminal C (small commercial airlines like Boutique Air and Advanced Air).
Keep in mind that although this was a great place to spot arrivals/departures on runway 17 previously, the runway is closed now.

Other Spotting Locations
FBO Parking Lot
Not recommended for long-term viewing (you will likely be told to leave), but OK for a quick shot or two.

University Blvd
As you drive down University towards the Spirit Drive location mentioned above, directly across from Access Rd B, there is a rather large dirt lot right on the threshold of runway 8. It is impossible to see departures on runway 08 from here, but arrivals onto runway 08 come in directly over your head at about 300 feet. This isn't an official spotting location, but it is probably the best spot to see arrivals onto runway 08 excluding the spotting lounge inside security.
Southwest Airlines is a dominant carrier at the airport. Traffic on the weekends is noticeably less than during the week.

Airlines such as Allegiant and Frontier do not fly to the Sunport every day of the week.

Royal Air Force VC-10s have been spotted a couple of times as well, but are a rare sight.

National Nuclear Safety Administration Boeing 737-400(C) aircraft are also a common sight at the Sunport.

The parking lot is best for spotting aircraft taxiing in and out of Terminal A (mostly Southwest) and Terminal C (small commercial airlines like Boutique and Advanced Air).

On your way to Spirit Drive (above), you will see a 747, DC-9 and smaller aircraft parked by the FAA hangar. There is an employee parking lot which gives excellent views of the 08 approach.
Resist the temptation to use it, you will quickly be told to leave or possibly worse.
Southwest Airlines is the dominant carrier at the airport. Traffic on the weekends is noticeably less than during the week.

Cargo

The Sunport sees regular cargo services from FedEx and UPS. FedEx typically utilizes the Airbus A300/310 with the Boeing 727 still a common sight. UPS from time to time sends its A300 to Albuquerque, though the Boeing 757/767 are more common. As a rare treat, the DC-10 has been known to make an appearance.

The 58th Special Operations Wing operates from Kirtland as well, affording the opportunity to see many MC-130s.

Royal Air Force VC-10s have been spotted a couple of times as well.

National Nuclear Safety Administration Boeing 737-400(C) aircraft are also a common sight at the Sunport, although they are not regularly scheduled.

The parking lot is best for spotting aircraft taxiing in and out of Terminal A (mostly Southwest) and Terminal C (small commercial airlines like Boutique and Advanced Air).

Locations to Avoid
FAA Facility
On your way to Spirit Drive (above), you will see a 747, DC-9 and smaller aircraft parked by the FAA hangar. There is an employee parking lot which gives excellent views of the 08 approach.
Resist the temptation to use it, you will quickly be told to leave or possibly worse.

Kirtland AFB
Time was you could park on the access road with impunity. Since 2001, this is now a totally secure area.
